Hi have been prescribed acrabose and metaformin by the doctor has anyone used these and have they helped in weight loss many thanks

hya and welcome,
there are many on the forum who have had metformin and probably some who have had acrabose, i myself was on metformin for a couple of years and did lose weight but it can affect people differently,
have a read around the forum and in the meantime you will get plenty of replies here :D

Metformin can help with appetite reduction. One of the side effects of Metformin is wind which should subside after a couple of weeks. Metformin works by fooling the liver into not producing so much glucagon.

I have no experience of acarbose.

Acarbose prevents the digestion of comlex carbs in the gut into glucose therefore the same effect could be achieved by simply not eating a lot of complex carbs and probably you would have less 'wind' with this method and also lose weight.

Whereas acrabose removes small insects from your genitalia

sorry unfair to pick on typos but it just struck me as a bit entertaining

People I know who have been prescribed acarbose, Prandin, Starlix etc. tend to use it as a one off to deal with a high carb meal rather than a regular drug which is very helpful if you eat out a lot.

It's an alpha amylase inhibitor and alpha glucosidase inhibitor rolled into one drug which should prevent some of the carbs being broken down properly so they continue to ferment further down the digestive system over a longer time reaulting in a reduced carbohydrate absorption.

I've been taking a supplement called phase2 which is also an alpha amylase inhibitor but this stuff doesn't also inhibit the alpha glucosidase. I am convinved something which combines alpha amylase and alpha glucosidase inhibitors would be a lot more effective for both BG control and weight loss and I would like to try some out. My doctor is hesitant, however when I go to Thailand the next time I'm going to get some anyway and run a atest for a couple of months. I can buy it over the counter there and will talk to a local endocrinologist about this.

I don't over do my carbs anyway and have cut down a lot literally overnight since my diagnosis at the end of November 2009. I've been losing weight slowly but surely since then. Right now I've lost about 26-27 lbs in the last six months and it's still coming down on a weekly basis. I eat normally but slightly lesser quantities. I avoid carbs with carbs - like chip sandwich for example, or baked potato with beans, I'll use chilli + cheese instead. I do eat some biscuits and the occasional sweet but only when my blood sugar is quite low - like 4.5-6.0 and never within 3-5 hours of eating a meal.
