Good morning, as a type 2 Diabetic with well controlled blood sugar - consistent 14 day average circa 5.0 mmol/l (90 mg/dl) I have been reasonably happy with my medication. 2 "Competect" tablets (manufactured by Lilly S.A. I think under licence from Takeda 61 Aldwych London UK) each day. Each tablet contains 15mg Pioglitazone & 850mg Metformin.
My GP when I lived in the UK changed me from Rosiglitazone (Avandamet!!) (with which I was happy) to Pioglitazone in 2003.
The email from Diabetes.co.uk this morning has prompted this post. I am currently on a low calorie (1,000 kcalories per day) diet with my GP monitored monthly by the practice nurse, shortly to become a VLCD - inspired to some extent by Kenny and Patch and the publicity surrounding the Newcastle University diet.
My original aim was to lose weight, have lower blood sugar and return to only metformin. I wonder if I should wait for the effects of the diet regime to kick in - lower blood sugar and weight loss (I need to lose a further 3 stone having lost 1 stone thus far) and hopefully be able to return solely to metformin? With Avandamet - Rosigiltazone and now Pioglitazone my options seem to be reducing rapidly. Anyone any thoughts or advice please.
