Additional support for people with diabetes

Hi all :D

My Mum was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about six months ago and I joined both Diabetes UK and the Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation after trawling the net.

I think it is important to get hold of all of the information you can especially for someone who is newly diagnosed and I was worried about her.

Just wanted to emphasise that the Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation have been so helpful both over the phone and through the monthly newsletter they send to their members. You can join online at their website http://www.drwf.org.uk by calling them or downloading the subscription form under the 'Wellness Network' section.

They may be a smaller charity but I found them them to be personal, efficient and allayed all of my fears. Just wanted to spread the word to give them a go, it's not only the bigger concerns that can make a difference!

Hello everyone

I have to agree with diabetesmatters. I too am a member of Diabetes UK and Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation. I've found Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation to be of great help to me. I've got Type 1 diabetes and have been to two of their wellness events and found them to be excellent.

I went to their Diabetes Wellness Day in Winchester in June this year. We had talks from the diabetes nurses from The Royal Hampshire County Hospital about diet and the importance of activity, a brilliant interactive exercise from the dietian and a Tai Chi class in the garden in the afternoon. They laid on refreshments, a lovely ploughmans lunch a huge display of literature and handouts and also an exhibitor room so we could speak to reps from the pharmaceutical companies. It was a great day and it cost us £5 each to attend.

I've been on one of their walking holidays, which saw us spend a week in Shropshire, rambling across the Long Mynd and I am due to attend their residential Diabetes Wellness Weekend this October, which has a fantastic weekend long line up of talks, activities and social activities. I can't wait, If it's as good as their other events it proves to be a cracking weekend.

Sweetums
