Hi, I have only been a Type 2 for 2 weeks and desperately seeking advice for eating out tonight on a works outing that was pre- booked.
I usually use 8ml of insulin before a meal. If anyone can advise how much I should adjust the dose for this set menu, please:
Pulled beef croquettes with crispy leeks.
Beef burger with fries and coleslaw.
Velvety warm brownie with vanilla pod ice cream.
Thanks in advance for any advice x

Hello @type1newbe and welcome to the forum. We're not medically trained, so it's against forum rules to advise on insulin doses. If you're not sure how much insulin to give in future, I'd suggest contact whoever is responsible for your diabetes. This may be a gp or hospital team.

I don't know if you've got a cgm, or are only using blood tests to check your levels, but I'd keep checking while you are out, and ensure you have some rapid acting carbs in case your levels are dropping too much.

You refer to be type 1 and then type 2 in your posts. It would be helpful for forum members to reply to your posts if you could clarify which type of diabetes you have please.

Hope you enjoy your meal, and once again welcome to the forum.

Hi @type1newbe ,

Nobody will know the correct dose for your meal, and we definitely can't give you dosing advice.
How much insulin different people will need for the same meal varies highly, some of us will only need 1 unit for this meal, others will need 80 units.

You usually use 8 units of insulin for your meal, how does this meal differ from your usual meals? This may be a start in working out if you need more or less than your usual dose.
How are you currently deciding on how much insulin to take for your meals? Are you calculating carbs and adjusting your doses based on that or are you using a fixed amount of insulin?

A possibility for this meal is check BG after the main course, and skip dessert if already rising quickly, especially if you usually don't eat sweet desserts.
What I often do to keep things easier to manage is to only have a single bite of dessert for flavour.

I think the main thing is to log how much insulin you've had, and how the meal affected your numbers during the 4 hours after.
This will give you a better idea on how much insulin you may need next time you'll have a similar meal.

Good luck!

Thanks very much for your help, I apologise on the typing error, I am a type 1. I tried calling my hospital helpline but it's an answer phone that will get back to you in next 5 days. I haven't been told my average yet as only had it two weeks but reading other posts, some people split their dose throughout the meal, checking bg before each shot.
Thanks again for your help, it's a big learning curve.

Thanks for clarifying that @type1newbe. It is a lot to take in when you're newly diagnosed, but it gets easier as time goes on.

If you're going to split your dose of rapid acting insulin, just remember that the first dose will still be working (called insulin stacking). Depending on what you're drinking, alcohol may well lower your blood glucose for quite a few hours as well, and it can be harder to spot a hypo.

It sounds a lovely meal by the way!

Let us know how you get on, and ask any questions you may have (there will be a lot, but that's fine). I'm still learning after decades with type 1. We're a friendly bunch, and there's usually someone around.
