Hi there!

I am new here. A little background, I was just recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes this past March. My AC1 was very high at a 12. Well, that certainly made me wake up and take charge of my health with eating better, waking a lot, etc. I also take Met Fomin. I got my ac1 down to 6 now, yay! I thought that was awesome until….

While out waking one day this august I noticed weird little black tiny dots. I got into just a nornal eye clinic to be checked. He said I had a large retinal hemorrhage and sent my to an eye specialist. To be honest he was kind of vague about it all, and I was even more confused as he never fully told me this was 100 percent whatever it was. Said we could do injections. I got one injection and seemed ok, nine days later I had a pretty big bleed in my left eye. (The first time ever) so naturally I went to the hospital where they could not help and told me to see specialist again. So next day different one looked at me and said the medicine is working as it is shrinking the vessels and sometimes some can break. Alright… still a bit confused thought this was all normal but after googling a lot I was the one that found all this diabetic retinopathy stuff and of course got worried as figured I deff have PDR. So, I saw him together to clarify everything, etc. mind you the blood has gone some out of my visions but I still see murky water, etc. He said that should clear maybe a month or so. Anyways, so he said I have advanced PDR and he wants to do more injections and then a laser to “clean it all up”. I ask him if my vision would get worse and he claims not at all that we can reverse this and that I won’t go blind and that there should be anymore bleeds.

I just don’t know if I trust him the way he is acting like this isn’t serious yet all the stuff I have read about advanced PDR deff is. Any advice? Have any of you had good outcomes after treatments where it did in fact stop you from even having another bleed? I am so new to all of this and know I must always control my blood sugars now tightly which I have. Do you think maybe in a few months that my eyes could improve because of all this changes?? Also now on a BO med too.

Thank you much

12% hba1c is equivilent to: 108 mmol/mol (which is the standard for many countries). Its high yes, but others such as myself were diagnosed with a lot higher (162 in my case) 48mmol/mol is the cut off for diagnosis (usually on consecutive test 2 tests). 42 (6%) is a lot lower huge congrats with that reduction. sorry to hear bleed with eye issue after treatment which your specialist has said can inded happen. It might be worth pointing out when originally lowered average blood glucose it took several weeks to get my vision back, was very blurry seeing dots/moving oily appearing pattern that gradually improved now vision is better than it was (a little bit anyhow). although wasnt metnioned nor did have injections in eye hopefully, as you've said its improved means it will get back to normal. it was explained to me that the eyes were adjusting to lower sugar levels and could take 'sometime' to get better. Great news that the specialist has said can reverse etc delighted for you. i'd take what hes told you at face value except even for non diabetic people as we age our vision generally gets at least a little worse over time i believe he maybe refering to non age ... part which most likely will be correct about.

Thank you so much for the reply! However, he did diagnose me with advanced proliferative diabetic retinopathy which from what I gather is the worse stage of all. It’s what causes some to go blind, etc. I just wanted to know if anyone else at this stage has actually reversed theres to the point where they haven’t ever gotten another bleed / retinal hemorrhage. The reason why I say maybe I don’t trust him is because of how serious this is from what I’m reading and how he can just be like yeah you shouldn’t get anymore bleeds and that we can reverse it, etc. Sorry, just very scared as I am so new to this and it happened all so fast within months. I still think I caused this by ironically getting my ac1 down so quickly as it can cause early worsening PDR but he claims no way to tell.

Hi it may take a while for all members to see your post as not everyone logs on regularly.

In the meantime perhaps you could have a look around this part of the forum where there are other posts relating to retinopathy.

Thank you for that. I will do just that.

Just be aware there is one lady posting who has been diabetic for some time with serious problems. But there are others whose situation is closer to yours.

Oh, you mean that she has this as well and has serious problems? I know it’s gotta be tough for sure. That would be nice to find others that can relate as well.
