Hi all im basicaly trying to self diagnose as my gp is not very good.

For years i have had experiences were i would go dizzy and faint especialy after eating. I remember once were i ate a large sandwich and a big slice of cheese cake and then proceeded to cut the grass and nearly fainted after feeling very dizzy i had to go sit in the van were i had the shakes and sweats for 30 minutes or so.

Rcently ive been getting headaches, dizzyness, blurry vision (unable to focus) confusion especialy forgetting what im about to do aswell as lack of concentration. Ive always had a huge thirst im constantly drinking something. I eat loads and i am over weight im always hungry too. Just lately ive been icthing like mad mainly around the groin area, feet and hands. Ive had to use lanacane as it keeps me awake at night but lanacane seems to have little effect.

I did some research today read up on symptoms and thought hey diabetes seems to fit. I had breakfast at 9am and nothing else untill 5pm this evening. Ive been to boots today and bought an accu chek compact plus. I took my blood sugar before i ate and got a reading of 9.3 mmol/l after 8 hours of not eating.

Im going to check it again 90 minutes after eating and at 2 hours as ive read thats what i should do.

Does anyone know if 9.3 mmol/l points to diabetes?

Advice: Speak to a medical professional for professional medical advice.

Having said that, fasting glucose > 7 mmol/l OR post-meal > 11.1 mmol/l with classic symptoms* present is sufficient to diagnose** diabetes (although a test done at home by an inexperienced user with an off-the-shelf meter is probably not good enough).

* Increased thirst, increased urination, increased hunger, as well as blurry vision.
** At the end of the day we can only apply the various NICE algorithms and diagnostic criteria, which is what your GP would be doing.

To be honest Sarge, you need a proper test done at doctors. The results 8 hours after eating could be indicative, but as it was during the day it could be that your sugars went too low and you got a "liver dump" where your system tops up your sugar. These one off tests with a home meter are misleading for diagnosis though - ok for monitoring AFTER diagnosis. Your doctor can give you a different type of test
Good luck!

Thanks for the replys i will take a trip to the docs tommorow. I just hope i dont get the old take 2 paracetamols and come back in twoo weeks line. :)

Took my blood glucose this morning before breakfast it was 6.5 mmol/l is that good?

So yesterday i had
9.3 mmol/l after a fast.
7.7 mmol/l 2 hours after a meal.
7.2 mmol/l when i went to bed about 2 hours after the last test.
6.5 mmol/l this morning before breakfast.

Should i go see the doc with that and see what he says?

Thanks once again.

Hi Sargie,

Sorry I don't have any real advice to give, I just don't want you feeling that people here are refusing to help you.

The people who have posted really have given you the best advice and that is to see your Doctor. They are right not to comment too much on the results that you are posting, as people here are not medical professionals.

The fact that you are having to come here first, rather than your doctor says a lot though. Is your doctor really as bad as you said in your opening post? If so, I think you need to look into making a complaint or changing doctor.

Good luck, and please come back before/after your appointment. I think the advice you are looking for at the moment is just a little too specific.

Once again, see the doc, but take your readings with you, and tell him/her that you understand that these numbers are "indicative" of diabetes or pre-diabetes (which they could well be, particularly the pre-breakfast one according to how long it had been since your last food of any nature)

Thanks once again im goingnto go into the docs tommorow morning before work. I could tell you lots of storys of misdiagnosis by my doctor mainly due to the reluctance to do any tests that cost money. but that is another issue. I will demand the tests if i have to. Thank you all so much for your time.

Went to the docs yesterday they tooks bloods for blood glucose and thyroid function and anemia.
