Hi, I am not actually a diabetic but type 2 diabetes does run in my family on both sides so I am wary of my genes and have started to follow a low carb life style. My mum has type 2 and is on medication, sorry not sure what type but she has been told that she is borderline to taking insulin unless she fixes it by diet, I am of course pro low carb but she has had the usual advice that carbs are very important to a diabetic  Is the Bernstein book an easy read? My mum is in the UK so probably wont like it much if it is written very much for the american market, I must admit it is really annoying when you read recipes etc and you can't get the ingredients! I would like to present it to my mum to try for a week or 2 and see how it goes, she is a fab cook so I am sure she could rustle up some lovely meals and not feel like she is missing out. Any tips would be greatly appreciated, her computer is broken so I can't send her here at the moment.

TIA, Katt

The Bernstein book is American of course and the biggest difficulty for most Brits is the units. The americans use mg/dl and we use mmol/L It doesn't much matter what that means at this point. It's enough to know that the conversion factor is 18.
If your Mum would like to read the book, She might wish to have her calculator and a pencil nearby and just write the converted numbers into it. It's not a difficult read and is divided up into sections, so It's possible to dip in and out.
Please assure your mum that carbs are only important for keeping your BG UP!
Remind her that a generation ago, the advice to slimmers AND diabetics was to cut down on bread, potatoes and cakes and biscuits. It didn't harm anyone and it worked. Somewhere that useful information seems to have got lost.

Thank you, I actually texted her and asked if I had the book sent to her would she read it and she said absolutely and seems very interested, I think the thought of having to inject herself has been a bit of a shock! I also saw a UK low carb cook book to get her with 365 recipes in. The exciting thing is that if my stepdad also follows the diet he will lose weight and be healthier too so my daughter will have healthy grandparents hopefully for a long time :D
