Hi all
I am 43, my Dad died of heart failure due to un-managed diabetes at the age of 60.
I have tested my blood sugar in the past after eating certain types of food and self diagnosed reactive hypoglycemia.
The last couple of weeks I have been feeling shaky, my legs and arms are tingly and numb and I have a taste in my mouth so I decided to test a fasting blood sugar and it was 12.3.

I've totally changed my diet (this was only 2 days ago) and my fasting blood sugars are now normal but I still have all the symptoms. What do I need to be doing, when to test etc? I also have high blood pressure which is un managed as I've been trying to do it with my diet. I realise I will have to see my doctor soon but I would like more info for them before I do.

Hi and welcome.

i would encourage you to get a doctor’s appointment as soon as you can.
Don’t delay while you do research and try to adjust your diet and make lifestyle choices (that could backfire on you and delay or dodge a diagnosis, which in turn could prevent you getting any treatment and monitoring that you need).

My personal experience is that there are some doctors who actively dislike patients who turn up with lots of evidence and a self diagnosis. Others are much more open minded and willing to listen. But none of them will take your home readings as proof of anything. Instead they will order their own set of tests, if they consider them necessary, using their own lab.

by all means continue reading and self educating, and posting here! But don’t do that instead of, or as a delaying tactic, to avoid a doc appt.

Hi and welcome to the forum, @LisaLeigh.

A reading of 12.3 is admittedly a bit high for a non-diabetic, but still possible. I guess it depends a bit of when you were tetsting your blood sugars (e.g. right after a meal).

To find out if you are truly diabetic, you would need to ask your GP for an HbA1c. If you are diagnosed, changing the way you eat works for a lot of us with T2 diabetes.

Stick with us. There are plenty of really knowledgeable members, who will be happy to help.

Again, welcome to the forum.

Hi @LisaLeigh and welcome, I agree with Brun please book an appointment today to see your GP, getting to the bottom of this with a health professional should be your no. 1 priority, let us know how you get on ?
