I hate abuse of any kind to humans or animals. I dislike judgmental people and people who are generally unkind, inconsiderate and have problems understanding the issues faced by others. I hate snakes!!! Cringe if I smell TCP!! and I cannot bare garlic!!
Hi all,

I'm very over weight at the moment and this is obviously having a negative impact on my diabetes control.

I've now just started on a weight reducing diet, but I'm confused at what I can eat.

Am I safe to just start on a healthy diet, cutting out fat and stodge as that's how I've managed to loose weight in the past?

Also, am I able to eat any fruit?

I can't really go on the low carb, high fat diet as I have heart problems, so I have to keep fat intake low.

I'd appreciate any advice please. :)

Basically it is a question of knowing how many calories you personally need to live your normal daily life, and then to reduce this amount sufficiently to lose weight. If you join My Fitness pal (free) you can type in your details and it will tell you how many calories you need to maintain current weight, or to lose x number of pounds a week. This will give you a starting point for you to work on. You can also keep your food diary on there and it will work out how many carbs/calories/protein/fat etc for you.

You could also consider the Newcastle Diet (plenty of info about this on the forum if you search).

If that doesn't shake your boat, then its all about cutting carbs and portions. This will also help your BS levels. Avoid bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, pastry and batter as well as the obvious culprits like chocolate and sugar drinks. Exercise is also important. Just a 20 minute brisk walk every day helps enormously.
You have to be careful with fruit as it contains a lot of sugar, so only in moderation. Berries seem to be best, but not too many. Portion control is vital.

Good luck.

Generally speaking the tropical fruits are the ones to cut down on, that's oranges, bananas etc. You can eat apples and pears in moderation.

The "healthy" diet has not been satisfactorily defined but in the opinion of most posters on this forum you needn't avoid saturated fat for the purposes of losing weight. You may have other reasons.

You can do the low carb part which consists mainly of avoiding flour and sugar and any products containing them and reducing your potato and rice portions. Some root vegetables should only be eaten in moderation also.

The foods that you call stodge are not clear. The hard part is finding out which processed and prepared foods have flour or potato starch hidden in them. The nuclear option is to avoid processed and prepared foods but since this may not be completely practical you must learn to read the label and avoid foods high in carbohydrates.

There, that should start you off.

Thank you both for your helpful replies, I shall take on board what you have said.
Bluetit1802 thank you, I shall have a look at the link that you kindly shared. :)
