My son has been diagnosed for 7 months now and seems to be coping well. However over the last 3 days his sugars have ranged from about 11 to 19. We are still only on tiny doses of insulin which has been set by the nurses. We have been having our usual meals. He has got a cough and seems alittle run down but not sure whether to ring the nurses or not. He is getting a little stressed about it as he knows that he is high plus he is very grumpy which seems to the norm now. Anyway I would be grateful of any advice going. Thanks. My son is 10

Hi there. With a cough and feeling of being run down it could be your son has a slight infection? Infections, colds, flu etc will cause blood sugar levels to rise - may explain the higher readings if they are unusual for you. Have you also been checking for ketones with higher readings? Poor boy. A growth spurt could be another reason, hormones also cause havoc with BG. If everything else is normal - eating, drinking etc, I would call the diabetic nurse for advice. Hope he feels better.

Hi my son 15 yrs was diagnosed 8 months ago, I find it very hard as he has special needs. I know the nurse told me recently if they have a cold or virus that it can play havoc with levels. Also though she said if you have a steady pattern of change in levels to notify her, as insulin ratio might need to be altered. If in doubt contact support team mine is on hand all the while and excellent. Hope this helps, it's a worry I know and so new.

Thanks for responses. He does seem to have had a slight growth spurt plus he may have an infection. I will try and speak to a nurse tomorrow. I don't want to over react thats why I thought I would ask for advice from people on the forum.

Hi your son has a high blood suger most likely due to his infection. It is very important to check his urine for Keton bodies and if it is present please seek immediate help even if you needed to go to hospital. It is an urgent matter and would need immediate attention. You will notice that whenever his blood suger is high he will become grumpy, irritable, moody and lethargic . Good luck

We have been testing his ketones and they have been 0.1 so ok. I have spoken to the nurse and she says that it may be because he has a cough or it may be his honeymoon period coming to an end. We have to wait and see. In the meantime she has advised me on correction insulin dosages. Will see how we get on. Thanks for all the advice.
