Advice on maintaining weight, please

I do not have diabetes
I was diagnosed as prediabetic two months ago and have since been having a sensible LCHF diet.

My weight this morning was 8st 9lbs. I really don't want to drop much below 8.7 stones, but find the weight is coming off rapidly. Just shows how much hidden sugar there was in my previous diet!

I am having plenty of fats i.e. Double cream in coffee, coleslaw, cheese etc. but seem to be loosing almost 1lb per day which I think is too much.

Advice, please.

Hi again! How was your hol in the States?

It sounds like you have clamped down too hard.

Since you are pre-diabetic, I suggest you increase your carbs while testing - I remember you getting a test meter from another thread. Maybe go up by 5-10g carbs a day, to let your body adjust gently.
(Assuming you are eating the right amount of protein, of course?)

So, slowly increase your carbs until either,
  • You stop losing weight, or
  • Your BG starts to rise too much.
At that point, you are at the top of your personal carb comfort zone.
After that, if you are still losing weight, you'll need to increase fat intake.

We had a great break on the US with our daughter. Spent Thanksgiving in Taos, a ski resort near to where she lives. As they had already had snow it really was quite magical. Delicious buffet lunch, too, which suited me perfectly. Thank you for asking!

Will follow your good advice. Still a little concerned about the high fat I am consuming and just hope my cholesterol doesn't start playing up.

May I wish you a very merry Christmas. I can't thank you enough for the wonderful advice you've given me over the last couple of months.

Hi lynn, firstly how tall are you? I am pre diabetic and the lower my bmi the better my hba1c. I used to have the problem of losing too much weight and found initially my cholesterol increased. Now I eat lots of healthy fats in the forum of nuts and olive oil to maintain my weight and my cholesterol has gone down.
Glad you had a good holiday:)

Hi, I am only 4ft 11ins so realise there is a lot of leeway as far as by BMI is concerned. However, at my age, I know what weight suits me and, personally, the lower end weight given on the NHS website is, I believe, way too low.

Am following all the good advice given about maintaining weight, including avocados in my diet, and hope my weight loss will level out.

Had a great holiday. Having had a full knee replacement last June, I was desperate to see my daughter again.

Merry Christmas!

have you tried a food counter programme like my fitness pal? you may not be having enough fats, as is often found.
just double check google with anything odd, as its user data base

No, will give it a go. After years of cutting back on fats, it still feels quite alien to be adding double cream to coffee and berries and having a cooked breakfast. Not complaining though!

Hi yes I think we all know what weight suits us best it is keeping it there that is the problem.I did not need to loose weight I have never been overweight and now my problem is trying not to loose anymore I am 5ft.5in and about 8st 7lb and I just feel to skinny now and would love to put on 3 or 4 lbs
Like you I am prediabetic and I eat plenty of good fats including avacados and quite a lot of nuts but if I go to low on the carbs I start to loose weight again I don't count carbs I just stopped all the sugar stuff and I don't eat rice or pasta.. don't like them...but I still eat some bread Burgen usually just two slices if I have toast with breakfast and I do eat new potatoes and some roasties and even some chips as a treat sometimes but not mash or jackets any more actually I don't cut out any vegetables at all I love them and I eat them all .
It is a far more difficult to keep weight on than to loose it and if you stick to a low carb diet no one can really give you the answer on how to do it without loosing more weight
Google it and you will find all low carb links are about weight loss diets because that basically is what low carb diets are for so nothing on how to stop loosing weight while on a low carb diet apart from stopping it

that doesn't seem to be right @AnnieC people have been on hard core 55g carbs lchf for years
but when you get your weight you can start adding back carbs if you want to, as long as you don't crave or put on weight

I take it Jack that you have never had the problem of trying not to loose weight
Low carb diets were originally devised for weight loss and they work, for diabetics LCHF to keep BG levels down it a relatively new idea and that is why most diabetics except on here have never heard of it. As a weight loss diet for overweight diabetics it's brilliant cut the carbs and you will loose the weight but for the slender diabetic who does not need to loose weight or want to it is a bit different. My doctor was not very happy when I lost over a stone in weight which I did not need to and I have never been able to put it back on regardless of how much fat I eat
Some of us have the genes to be slim it runs in our families and we are happy with that and we can usually keep a steady constant weight most of our lives but it stands to reason if we go low carb we are going to loose weight whether we want to or not so LCHF is far more difficult for us to maintain and not drop below a healthy weight

Try googling ketogenic maintenance diet or keto adaptation and see what comes up (I haven't done it). There is now some favour in LCHF for some types of epilepsy and other conditions which are not about weight loss, so there will be stuff out there.

It isn't easy to maintain weight. I lost 4 stone on LCHF and reached my target weight. That bit was easy. I started a maintenance regime and still haven't got the balance quite to my liking after over 2 months of trying. It is easy to say increase your carbs, but I am already on the maximum my pancreas can deal with (60g). Added fats and protein isn't helping my fasting levels at all, or at least I think that's the reason. I may be wrong. It is really difficult. I have been relatively stable over the last few weeks, but could still do with an added couple of pounds. Maybe Christmas will help a tad! ;)

Do you have a view on Stevia sweetener? Have you felt the need to use a sweetener in tea/coffee? People said I would soon get used to drinking them without sugar, but I haven't!

I have used Saccharin based sweeteners (Sweetex) in my drinks for the past 30 odd years, so I can't really comment..

it may be the protein breaking down to glucose at the rate of 50% ....the fat breaks down to glucose of 10%
make sure you are having your full fat quota before you add protein..

I'm sure you are right, Jack. I have put it down to the large amounts of cheese. Too much protein. I have just started to cut down on cheese and will add some more fat to compensate.

I do use Stevia for sprinkling on frozen berry fruits they are so sour but I never had sugar in tea or coffee so don't miss that

It's not true that low carb diets are new for diabetes, they were used routinely for decades until the "low fat" dogma came in.
I wonder if you are really getting enough fat if you still fear it. Dr Annika Dahlquist says "Butter your cheese"!, and use rich sauces on steaks and chops. Melt together butter and cream (and cheese if you like) to make a simple sauce. It's good with steak and fish for example.
