Coming in a bit late, but as my name was mentioned, thought I would give my experience. After being diagnosed T1, I went around 2 1/2 years without insulin or meds, just LCHF diet and exercise. I was given insulin pens etc around 18 months before I used it, with clear instructions about use storage and when to start from my consultant and nurse. I started on insulin when I was on holiday in Australia, as I could see my BG levels rising (probably because of the heat and lack of exercise). A few weeks after I returned from Oz, I stoped taking insulin for a few months before my BG started to rise again. My consultant had told me to start insulin earlier rather than later.... in that I should not let my BG levels raise to much... so when I struggled to keep them below 6.0 I started taking a few units. I have now been on insulin for nearly 2 years, but only take around 12 units per day, I have been Ketogenic and on a LCHF diet for 5 years now but with a lot less exercise than I used to do. My weight hasn’t changed in 5 years and during this time my HBA1C has always been between 32 and 39. The LCHF ketogenic diet has worked fantastical well for me and my BG levels. I am fitter and healthier now than I was 10 years before diagnosis.
