Hi all,

I was diagnosed T2 back in March, first HbA1c was 6.7% - no meds, just diet and exercise. Second HbA1c came back today at 6.6% which I'm really disappointed with.

I've reduced down to a lower-carb diet and my own blood sugar testing results over the past 3 months have dropped from an average of 7.5 to 6.4...so I was expecting a much greater improvement in the HbA1c result. 6.6% is indicative of an average blood sugar reading of 7.7 - so am I perhaps not seeing the highs from my own testing??! My testing has been fairly comprehensive - generally before/after lunch and dinner, sometimes in the mornings or before bed.

My concern is that my diet is very different to what it was from Jan-Mar this year and yet no change in the result. I've lost about 10lbs since I took out a lot of the carbs so something is changing...but not my blood sugar!

Does anybody have any advice or a similar problem? My nurse didn't have anything much to say, other than to avoid the peaks but to be honest, I get very few bs readings over 8.

Thanks

Hi SarahK,

There are a lot of diabetics out there who would kill to have a Hba1c of 6.6%.
I can imagine your doctor would of been happy with the result.

While diet and exercise will be a big help, they won't always be the complete answer to
type 2. You may well require some oral meds at some point in time, but there's no reason
for this to mean that you're on a terminal decline towards insulin dependance.

So keep up the good work!

Good luck,
timo.

Hi Sue,

Not really - I wasn't much of a potato/rice person anyway but I don't touch them at all now. Even wholewheat pasta sends my bloods soaring so I've stopped eating it. I did follow the initial advice from the nurse to go low GI but after 2 weeks found that it was pretty uncontrollable for me. I was peaking and troughing a lot with my blood sugars.

The only carbs I really eat is a bowl of sugar-free muesli with fruit in the mornings because that's when I go to the gym and need the energy. Lunches and dinner now are pretty carb free. So my BS readings are a lot steadier - ranging really from about 5 to 7.5.
