hya all,
i only joined here a few months ago and have found it great,
i was diagnosed as type 1 4 yrs ago and was on novomix 30 for over two years which wasnt doing me any good,i put a lot of weight on and my bloods were around 10mmol,nearlly 2 yrs ago i was put on lantus,i was going high a bit then real low and following advice on ere asked 2 gps at my surgery if i could go onto mdi,the answer was i didnt need to,anyhow i was put on metformin for a few mnths with lantus then i was having multiple hypos so metformin was stopped and lantus lowered, any way i still werent happy with my numbers so i started going lower carb which made me have most of my numbers b4 meals under 6mmol,in february i weighed 80kg,hba1c was 7.7,ive got diabetic clinic on weds and need some advice b4 i go...
my hba1c is now 7.2 and i weigh 70kg since going lower carb,i am having hypos most days but to keep my b4 meals low all day this seems the only way on just the lantus,
what im asking is..should i carry on as i am and see if my next hba1c has gone down or should i push for something else as i really want to get a better hba1c
sorry 4 wafflin, any advice will be appreciated as i have my big app on weds.. amanda :D

If you are having lots of hypos, you have too much insulin circulating. You don't want to eat more carbs to prevent it, so the only option left is to reduce the insulin. Are you brave enough to do this yourself?
You can look up ways of calculating how much insulin you need to cover amounts of carbs you eat.
the Bernstein book shows how.
If you don't want to do it without your doctor's advice, Ask them when you see them. They probably won't like the reduced carb diet, but if HbA1c is good, they might come round
Let us know what you decide and how you get on

Hi Amanda

You are doing really well to just manage your diabetes using lower carb and lantus on its own. To stop Lantus having too much of a lowering effect on your bg, you could try splitting the dose and injecting it at breakfast and before evening meal. As long as you are able to test your bg frequently then you should see a more even coverage.

MDI will give you better control but its at the cost of doing 4-5 injections. If you decide that you would like to try this I recommend that you ask to switch from Lantus to Levemir as its more gentle and use Apidra or Humalog as the fast acting insulin. For a while you might find this difficult but with using trial and error you can find your ideal bolus and basal doses without too many hypos.

All the best

thanks for the advice,
im willing to try anything, just wondering whether to carry on as i am and see if hba1c carries on falling or to try push for mdi as ive never heard of anyone else on just lantus, altho my g.p wouldnt change me last time i asked
