Hello,
My 18 year old has been great for the last 6 months managing blood levels etc. However the moods have changed over the last two weeks and when asked to see the readings I found blood levels have been run in between 20-36. They have been brought under control with insulin, but I worry that it is not under proper control. I appreciate that I don't have much say with him being 18, but anyone able to advise me regarding this. Is a hospital visit in order? I'm worrying myself silly. Many thanks

Results in the 20-36 range obviously need some attention.

Whether a hospital visit is required depends on the circumstances. Has he been counting carbs and injecting appropriately or has he gone off track and just eaten what he fancied and maybe not injected appropriately?

The high blood sugars could be the reason for the changed moods - or the changed moods could have affected his eating/injection habits. Who knows with teenagers! Only you can find this out, so I think a wee chat is called for.

Good luck!

I wish I could have a wee chat, he just seems to think I'm having a go. I think it's a mixture of not counting carbs, diet and totally of track. Still I'll keep plugging away, I only have his best interested at heart, just frustrating.
Thanks for the info,

more than normal to worry about your kids, be careful you don't go too far, support him to help himself, it's his diabetes.

at least he is testing to have those levels on the meter, so that's a good start. He would be welcome to join in the forum to talk to other diabetics and what is worrying him may not be the same as what's worrying you.

Hi Jojo,

Jack412's advice is sound.. & I'm not really going to add any more to it.

I can only mention on noticing that we have the same vintage year of birth.. & funny enough my wife & i had a similar conversation regarding discussing my "well-being" with her if anything was wrong the other night.
my point being. it was a struggle even with my good diabetes control not to "revert" to my teens on this occasion. outwardly expressing empathy for my wife's unwarranted concern.. But i suppose that comes with the emotional maturity i've supposed to have acquired at my age...

Incidentally, i see alot of concerned wife's of "wayward D's" on here too with similar issues..
You son should find his way as soon as he fires up an account here!

All the best!

I would almost certainly get him referred over to the care of his hospital diabetes clinic, they are more specialised there in dealing with the problems that your son is experiencing.

Sorry sent before completed :)

I get what you mean that you can't really tell him what to do as such as it's similar with my parents but if you just make sure he knows your worried and suggest he gets a doctors appointment, that works better for me rather than my parents booking me an appointment ect

He hopefully is just having a blip which everyone has at some point he may just need a bit of encouragement and motivation to get back on track.
:)
