Type of diabetes
Type 2

My Dad is 73 and has had type 2 diabetes for about 15-20 years. He isn't overweight but doesn't exercise due to signs of arthritis and pain in his knees - walks but nothing high impact. He has been on metformin for years and a year ago he had to have his does increased slightly - he can't remember what his levels were but is due his annual check up soon so i've asked him to remember them!

He is convinced that because his diabetes is being controlled by metformin that he doesn't have to watch his diet - it isn't an awful diet but doesn't eat like a diabetic should in my opinion and will eat carbs as he always has done.

I'm not sure if this is right, or if he should be taking his diet more seriously.

Also, not sure if he should ask for an SGLT2?

Thank you for any advice (because he won't ask for any)

Hi

Can't help with the SGL test as I have never heard of it but I think the time to worry is after you get the result.

If the HB1Ac figures are reasonable then he may be right.

Does he have any complications?

I believe my arthritis pains may be worse as a result of diabetes for example, but I cannot say so with any certainty.

Let us know what the result is but if it's below 6 or so I wouldn't worry about it.

I would wait until you get his HBA1c results and depending on that, he may be offered more medication. Does he test his blood sugars?

This is the drug you are referring to,
http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes-medication/sglt2-inhibitors.html

There are other medications if needed before this particular one is offered.

I'll tag @daisy1 to provide some basic information that might help you see what he needs to be aware of with regard to diet.

Get him to ask for a print out of his test results then he won't have to remember and you will have a better idea of how he's doing.
