Hi

I have been low carbing & managing to reduce my bloods since being diagnosed with T2 on NYE & wondered if someone could tell me if I'm doing the right thing menu wise pls. I also have quite a bit of weight to lose so am using it for weightloss too.

Breakfast: Natural yogurt (6.4 carbs)
Lunch: Usually Tuna/egg/prawn mayo with veggies or philly on 2 cracker bread with tomatoes & cucumber
Dinner: Veg omlette, Slow cooked meat & veggies, meat & salad.
Snacks: Apple, satuma, melon, ham

I'm not eating all of that in one day obviously!!

Today I invested in a multi vit (diabetone) & something to help keep me regular. I'm on 2x500g metformin p/d

I just wondered what you wise ones on here think of my food choices & if you can offer up any advice pls as to what else I can do?

Many thanks Linzi

I am a newbie experimenting with my own diet but I wouldn’t be able to handle the carbs in the crackers or the melon. :(
Best thing is to test before your meal and two hours after so that you can work out what you can tolerate and what you are eating is doing to your bg numbers. Also work out the number of carbs you are actually consuming.

Thanks for replying...

I'm testing before & after meals again although I was told only to test once a day on monday but I feel I'm still learning about what my body can tolerate & I still need to get my bs down. How am I meant to do that by testing once a day?

I'm about 7.5 (down from 16.4 beginning of Jan) before meals & sometimes I'm lower than that after meals. Ranges between 6.7 - 8 after a meal on this woe.

My total daily intake of carbs is between 40-60g is this still too high??

Not sure how much more I can cut out.

Melons only 4.9 & 2 crackerbread 8.5 carbs per 100g thats pretty low isn't it??

Just when I think I'm getting a handle on it... I get all confused again!!!

Hi DB,

in the initial stages I would suggest you need to test many times a day to find out what effects your different foodstuffs are having. I tested as follows :-
First thing on rising (fasting)
Breakfast + 1 (hour), Breakfast + 2 (hours). Midday meal + 1. Midday meal + 2, Evening Meal + 1. Evening Meal + 2 and on retiring.

My lo-carb target is approx 50g per day, though I dont get too irked if I go a little above or below.
Now I know what I can and cant eat, I have lost 5 1/2 stones since May 2009 and my blood glucose readings are more often than not in the non-diabetic range. My last HBA1C was 5.6% (originally 10.3).

As for crackers, I often have Melba Toast or Matso crackers for breakfast, they fit perfectly into my lo-carb regime. Fruits are a strange one as some can tolerate them whilst others can not. I am OK with berries as long as I dont overdo it.

Non- diabetic readings are Fasting, under 5.5, meal + 1, under 7.8 and Meal + 2 under 6.6.
The NICE guidelines for diabetics are a little higher.

Looks like you are eating well and making great progress to me.
Just up the testing and food experimentation for a bit!

All the Best - Steve
