Aeroplane meals

Hi All,

I am flying to New Zealand later this year, and wondering if anyone else has done so whilst trying to maintain a LCHF diet? There is an option on the special meals for Gluten Free, but nothing Low Carb.. there is also a diabetic option which when I looked at it was high carb low fat so I didn't choose that one!

Ideas?

Lesley :)

I only flew short haul, but the plane meals are useless for low carbing - you either forget the diet for the flight (only really an option if you're type 1 & can use more insulin) or make your own food & smuggle in on in your hand luggage. I thought I'd be able to buy a salad from the Boots in the airport, but they all contained pasta or couscous & had >30g carbs in a portion.

Hi Lesley,

It's a problem I think, airline food is pretty awful anyway!! We are going to Canada and USA in May so I face the same dilemma, only with less flying time than you. When I've gone over previously, before diagnosis I tried to avoid the food anyway but it does pass the time.
Think I might opt for the diabetic option and just leave what I can't eat. Portion sizes are minute anyway so even their bread rolls must be fairly low in carbs. Also, if you go for something different e.g. diabetic, gluten free veggie etc they always bring it round first, you don't have to watch loads of other people getting their food before you.
I also think Vicki's advice is good and will be taking hardboiled eggs, cheese sticks pepperami etc in my hand luggage.
Have a wonderful trip, have never been to NZ hear that its a lovely place. We are going to the Rockies and a couple of weeks in Vancouver really looking forward to that, then to relatives in New York State. Much prefer Canada to USA but thats just personal.

Thanks Vicki and Anne

I have requested a gluten free meal, it might not be totally adequate but at least it shouldn't have too many grains. I figure if desperate I can get a burger at the airports where we stop to refuel. If not then, as I am not insulin dependant, I can probably go without food without too much hassle if I eat as late as possible before I fly and as soon as possible once I reach New Zealand.
I have never really been to Canada, crossing the border at Niagara doesn't really count but would love to go there to visit. My sister lives over near Calgary so I hope to go over next year, but I tend to go to New Zealand as often as possible to see my daughter and three of my grandsons.

I fly in less than two weeks now so will be able to let you know how I got on when I get back in mid-March. :)

I flew to the US in January, I got a chicken salad in the airport to take onto the plane, and had bags of almond and peanuts to satisfy hunger pangs. I also took a string of babybels and a collection of pepperamis. Then I picked the best bits out of the meal - chicken, and butter was about it but I kept filling up on a handful peanuts whenever I was peckish. When I stopped in Washington before transferring to the next plane, I got a beef salad for the next leg of the trip. It all worked ok :)

I don't think they mind you taking food onto the plane, but they don't like you bringing it into the destination country, so as long as you have eaten everything - or thrown it away, you should be fine.
