Hello all

I wonder if anyone else has found this happening to them? I got off to a flying start with dealing with my type 2, but just under 6 months now of truly dealing with it, I am finding things harder going. In spite of having lowered my HbA1c result, and in spite of losing nearly a stone ( down to 8 stone 7 lbs ) I am suddenly finding that my post prandial levels are not right. OK they are not awful, but they were better a few months ago.

How, I wonder, can I start the day at 6.5mmol/L, have almond porridge ONLY for breakfast, go to the gym, do an hour's tough exercise - come home and find my BS is still 7.5mmol/L over 3 hours after eating anything?? Surely I'm looking for 6s or even 5s here??

I'm doing even more, exercising more, have lost weight, am eating less carbs and my average BS is on the up slowly but surely. I don't have a cold, or feel unwell.

I don't understand it.

Can anyone give me a clue??

Thanks x

Hi Cathy

The exercise at the gym could be causing you to liver dump because as because you are low carbing you wont have a lot of glucose hanging around for your muscles to use when exercising. Most peoples insulin resistance in the morning is at its worst so any liver dump may take quite a while to then come down at that time of day. That's all just guesswork on my part. You could see what happens if you eat your normal breakfast and don't exercise i.e do you end up two hours later with better readings? If it does turn out to be the cause I'd add a few more carbs to your breakfast maybe in the form of something quite fast acting like the sugar you get in berries.

Hi Cathy, I too went off to a flying start and then plateaued both in BG and weight, tried upping calories but not carbs but it didn't work, but then I decided to try a low glycemic load diet and supplements and it is working a treat in the 4s and 5s regularly now apart from first thing in the morning.

I personally find the diet quite easy to follow and have been surprised by the results. For instance, when I was learning the ropes of what I could and couldn't eat, I found that porridge made with oats would really spike me. Now, for breakfast, I have porridge made with 40g oats, 2 heaped tsps of oatmeal, 300ml water/soya mix and a teaspoon of Cinamon and agarve nectar. Two hours later I am usually in the 6s and before lunch between 4.7 and 5.5.

I also take chromium Picolinate each day - so far so good.

If you're interested try reading up on Dr Patrick Holford it may work for you too.

By the way, I always find that exercise makes my BG rise so I tend to do it at least two hours after breakfast. I think that the Dawn phenomenon combined with exercise panicked my liver into overdrive

Thanks so much both, for your replies. The liver dump theory had never occured to me. I will be working around that premise this week. I'll test when I don't exercise and when I do - and I will add a few carbs to the tank before exercising and get those results too. I'll also follow up on the low GL diet.

I felt so stressed last week ... now I feel there's somewhere to go and more to find out, instead of panicking that medication is just around the corner!! ( not that there's anything wrong with that, but just want to avoid it for as long as possible ).

Many many thanks xx
