Sent a sample off on Monday for an alimimun test and the doctor has now requested me to make a double appointment with the nurse I am newly diagnosed and controlling my condition with diet. If the results show protein, will I have to take medication to controll the diabetes, I already have meds for blood pressure and statins for my colesterol

The tighter you can keep the blood glucose, the kinder to your kidneys.

I assume that this was a basic unrine test?

Protien in the urine can be caused for several reasons infection etc.. and of course a sign of kidney damaged in the diabeic... (I assume the doctor has ruled out the infection side)

The abliumin test is normally carried out from a 24 hours to see if the kidneys are are damaged, and how much that damage might be..

It means that you will really need to keep a eye on your diabetic control the better the control the more chances there is in stopping any futher progression...

You are already on BP tablets, so one of the medications that they give to help protect the kidneys you are already taking they might change these to one that they feel might give better protection...

You say that you control your diabetes with diet alone, if your control isn't good is there away that you could improve via diet.... Looking in how to manager both carb intake or types of carbs to your best advantage?

It might be that you are at the stage where you will need help of medication and diet to control your diabetes...
