Alcohol and Diabetes

Before being diagnosed I mostly drank beer. Most beers (I think all halfway decent beers) are chock full of really easily absorbed carbohydrate - and do very bad things to BG levels. Sadly this means that beer must now be a rare treat indeed  Fortunately, I have also always been fond of wine, and I have now taken to drinking red wine most of the time :D. Provided that you are sensible, this is actually beneficial in many ways. The alcohol reduces BG and anthocyanins (the main red pigment) is well known to reduce the rate of blood clotting and make heart disease less likely. There are also quite good claims that it has anti viral and anti cancer activities. I also occasionally drink single malt whiskies. Wine lowers my BG - to the extent that a very low carb meal sometimes barely registers on my meter. One of the more surprising discoveries I have made since I have been monitoring my BG is that, for me, the ultimate diabetic meal is steak with salad and red wine. Whisky sends my BG plumetting. I'm a T2 not on tablets, and don't think that I am at risk of hypos, but for people who are - I would be very careful about whisky.
