Alcohol and Type II Diabetes

,Hi Newbie here....

I've been diagnosed with type II for about 2 weeks now, but just wanted to ask a quick question regarding Alcohol. Yesterday I drank more than I planned, as I was out on a day at the races with the lads!!! I've never been a massive drinker normally once every 2 or 3 weeks, but consumed a fair amount when i did!! I Know with Diabetes it's not the best idea, so I took the precautions before and ate some carbs (toast) before drinking, and some more whilst drinking too and after I had finished had my dinner. My sugars were 11.2 before I started drinking, and after drinking 5 pints of lager, my sugars were 6.5. I was under the impression that I would be higher. In the morning when I woke I was 9.5 and a few hours later back down to 6.5 again. (which is also the lowest I've been since being diagnosed).

Forgot to add that I am on Metformin 500mg, 2 tablets a day.

So my question is: Is this normal to happen when drinking beer, or if not what would have casued my sugars to stay "ok"?

Thanks Mike

Thanks for the reply and the advice. Surely overdoing it a little bit wont harm as long as your sugars are ok and your not drunk!! Will it?? Someone give me some hope!!

My DN said it was ok to drink, but she didnt advocate me going and getting slaughtered!! I was told to eat before and after, some higher carb stuff too. Can I also add that the 5 pints I had was over an 8 hour period, so was drinking very slowly. I was still sober too so in control and felt 100%. Before diagnosis it would have been probably double that, but like I said before, It's not too often I would drink.

I've got my mind set well on the diet aspect of what I should do, but it's just the thought of missing out on a few drinks with friends thats troubling me. (I know it would be ok for one or two, but I would still be stone cold sober by then and the thought of not ever being even slightly tipsy again disturbs me!!)

Luckily I have no symptoms as yet, so feel the same as I have done for years. I just had a reak thirst and checked on my daughters BG machine and I was high, and doctors appointment confirmed I had Diabetes, but still waiting for my initial blood test results etc to come through, so a bit in the dark about things like this because apart from a brief discussion, with the DN, I havent spoke to any other doctors or dietician as yet (Still waiting for my GP surgery to contact me). My sugar was reading HI on the meter at first diagnosis so i'm really glad to have got it down to 6/7 which it seems to be averaging today, and it seems to me that those few pints have helped or am I wrong??!!

Hi Mike,

I am not the Drink Police.

As you have demonstrated to yourself, alcohol lowers blood sugars and it can continue to lower them for several hours afterwards. Make sure your buddies are aware that you could hypo and the signs are very similar to being drunk.

It has to be a personal choice and I am sure there are plenty of forum members who drink more than the recommended amounts.

Catherine.
