Alcohol swab

I was told yes - was told only to use soapy water and dry well. Constance use of alcohol wipes can also toughen the skin making it more painful for pricking

Apparently it can. Only one way to find out... test yourself twice - use the alcohol wipe and take a test, then wash with soap and water and do it again? At least you will then know. Let us know what happens!

Alcohol swabs are only to kill bacteria. If you are trying to cleanse contaminates, like sugar, you need to wash, as the only thing a swab will do, is spread the contaminant about.

Washing thoroughly with soap and water, rinsing under a running tap, and drying thoroughly is recommended.
There is little point in disinfecting a tiny food particle on your finger. It will still be there, and may have glucose in it. The alcohol may also cause problems.

Can cleaning my finger with an alcohol swab affect the reading?

As others have said it's said that the alcohol content effects bg readings.

If your unable to wash your hands when out and about then there are suitable products available, do a google search for Dia-Wipes.
