Hi Red here,

firstly am feeling a lot more stable now, and apologies if i seemed a bit all over the place (demanding) when i first joined this forum. i was scared and also am in a very difficult relationship. thank you for sticking with me. it has been a great support and source of info. I dont think i would have, i KNOW, I wouldnt have lost the 2 stone and got my hb1ac to 7.3, and am still working hard on both.

I have a question regarding alcohol. i have read a few places on the forum that alcohol can reduce blood glucose levels. basically i wondered if drinking some, b4 bed? as someone suggested, is an idea? I dont actually like it (alcohol) which seems to make me more a social leper than being gay    , but focusing on the question I would be able to drink one glass of it a night, if it helped my health? or is the alcohol bad for your health so therefore it wouldnt be an overall benefit?

I am interested to hear any feedback on this, and if so if anyone does think it is a good idea, which alcohol would be advised for the purposes of reducing the bg levels. at night? what amount?

Thank you for any responses, and thanks again for sticking with me.
sincerely
Red

There are some very mixed messages about alcohol and the health risks and benefits, you can regularly read about the latest piece of confusing research on the BBC, who also did an article about why the research can be so contradictory :? especially for women. However, it is legal to consume alcohol and I think you have to weigh up the risks and advantages.

However, there are interactions with some medications and alcohol is also a depressant

I like red wine, a decent bottle of beer and expensive cider, as well as a few spirits. That said, I drink maybe 1-2 glasses of wine, cider or beer a month, usually at home on my own because I like the taste and because I like the slight relaxing effect that a glass has on me if I'm feeling chilled and mellow. I alse enjoy a portion of cointreau over strawberries and cream form time to time, this is pure pleasure.

When I have enjoyed a nice glass of red wine and it has given me some lower readings the morning after, when I would have expected a higher reading based on what I have eaten. I understand the different kinds of alcohol have differnt effects on your blood sugar the morning after. Red wine (and I think one the Chilean reds came out best) may have some cardiac benefits, although this does depend on the research you read.

My alcohol consumption is so low that I tend to get drunk very quickly, it goes straight to my knees  and I'm told I'm an amusing drunk  If you don't drink you don't have to be a social lepper, not all lesbian/gay/bisexual/trasngenered people hang out in bars. Although when I have gone out to bars, not drinking means that I may end up driving.

If you like a drink, go ahead, if you don't, then don't. It may be that you have just not found the kind of drink you like. Not drinking isn't a character defect. When I drink I do it because I like the taste and the alcohol relaxes me, rather than for any health benefits.

Since I discovered the single glass bottles I have increased my consumption slightly, to around a glass a week, although one of the single glass bottles recently lasted me 2 evenings  Drinking to excess is not attractive and I do not like being around people who are drunk, irrespective of what it may be doing to their blood sugar readings and their cardivascular system.
