hi iam newbie i was reading posts on alcohol this may be of interest one diabetic specialist nurse told me if i like a can of lager to drink not a lot of because its high abv i think its nine the drink she told was carlsberg special brew because all the sugar turns to alcohol true

In general terms, the stronger the alcohol the less sugar is left, so spirits like whisky have zero carbohydrates (sugar). With lager, you can get coors light which is normal strength (4.5%) but half the sugars of other lagers. I quite like it, and it's more of a session beer than special brew!

Diagnosed with T2 recently, and i do like a drink, but for now im on diet control and then metformin later on, so would low carb beer + topped with diet lemonade (lagertop) be okay for me to drink??

Thanks.

Yes. On diet only or metformin, there's no reason why a diabetic shouldn't drink the same as anyone else.

I get confused, people quote carbs, but not G.I. of drinks. if the carbs are glucose and maltose then they will have a high G.I. index. How about calories in drinks, given that alcohol significantly contributes to this ?

There are a lot of calories in drinks, but the carbs is a different matter.
Spirits like whisky, vodka etc have zero, because the sugar is all turned to alcohol.
Wine has comparitively few, because again most of the sugar (but not all) is turned to alcohol.
Beer has a fair amount of carbs, bitter more than lager, but although you might expect a high GI, they're not. That's because the alcohol impedes the ability of the liver to process the carbs into sugar. That's why, even on beer, most people will see their sugar levels drop. Some say it goes up initially, but I don't get that. Even the next day, after a boys night and 7 or 8 pints, my sugar levels will be normal or lower than usual - not that I do that often, or recommend it to others!
Good luck and cheers!
