Alkali food diet to reduce blood ph

Hello, first post from husband of insulin dependent diabetic who seemed to acquire the condition after a road accident and fractured skull some years ago.

Currently the above diet is being promoted to cure overweight and all ills with people supposedly being cured of all manner of things including diabetes. Is there any truth in it or is it just Internet marketing?

The short answer is that I don't know.

I am reading a book about vitamin D supplementation and it goes on about acid/alkali balance as well. The big idea is that all cereals, saturated fat, salt, meats/fish/eggs and dairy products especially cheese make your blood more acid. Vegetables and fruit especially spinach make your blood more alkaline. To get the best balance this book says you should mainly eat lean good quality protein 1.2 g per kilogram ideal weight with each meal and three times the weight of this in vegetables/fruit using mono and healthy sources of polyunsaturated oils.

I don't think that the diet they suggest is unhealthy but I don't think I could do it. I already eat very little from the cereal group but I love saturated animal fats and salt and don't think my guts could cope with all these vegetables.

As I've never heard of this diet, so I googled it to see what info it brought up...

A quick glance and flick through, give me the impression that it oppersite to the Akins type of diet, it seems to promise a lot and does seems to have some information to support it's theories... But with saying that so do most diets that claim to be the be all and end all....

I would tread with extreme caution indeed, research it, and if in any doubts speak to your gp...

What I've seen also suggests that this deit might be a veggitian type diet verging on vegan diet... Two diets that in many respects can be followed but do come with problems to take into consideration such as healthy amount of protien and calcium is a problem to achieve more so with the stricter vegan diet...

If foods are acid or alkaline when we ingest them, they don't stay that way for long. the alimentary canal has regions of different pHs and mechanisms to maintain them. Most of it is fairly alkaline, but the stomach is strongly acidic ph 2.( that's why vomit burns)
Yes I know that "the Establishment" rejects Atkins etc and low carb for diabetes, but weightloss is a money spinner.
 
PS alkalis have pH numbers above 7, so alkals wouldn't reduce a pH. Isn't the ph of normal blood about 7.5? which is just on the alkaline side of neutral. ( not sure of this. Can't remember)
Lowering the pH would make the blood neutral or acidic.
 
I scanned the article again and found a real nonsense. something about carbohydrate and protein enzymes requirin different pHs. Since all enzymes are protein, this is rubbish, unless it means enzymes for protein digestion are different from enzymes for carbohydrate digestion. In which case the writer's English is rubbish. Part of being a scientist, surely is to express oneself clearly.
 
The book I have now finished reading is "The Vitamin D Cure" by a Dr O'Dowd.

He is a specialist in rheumatic diseases and treats people with muscular pains with:

a. a paleo style diet. (lean protein, loads of non starchy veg, fruit and very little dairy especially cheese and no refined carbs or any grains) So it isn't very low carb but it certainly isn't high carb either.
b. vitamin D
c. omega three supplements
d. exercise

This is meant to improve almost everything eg immunity, insulin sensitivity, cardiovascular deterioration, muscular pains and mood.

I had been looking at vitamin D in depth since I listened to a webcast by a USA cardiologist who is using Vitamin D, omega 3s and a low carb diet to reverse atheromatous plaques. He scans people's hearts to measure the effect. This was broadcast on the Jimmy Moore site. "Living la vida low carb" in the last month.

O'Dowd goes into the issues in some depth. The reason he says to normalise the pH balance of the food you eat is that acid formation promotes too high magnesium and potassium loss by the kidney. This affects calcium metabolism, bone modelling and muscle function/pain.

I have just read that a study has shown that young women with low vitamin D levels are prone to hypertension. We already know that vitamin d is important for type one diabetes and multiple sclerosis.

There could be something to the diet Dr O'Dowd is suggesting but as yet this is pretty new territory for me and I would be interested in what others have read around the subject.

When I was teaching Chemistry, we only knew about H2O. and didn't some rresearch in this country a few year ago show that tap water is safer than bottled. It's more rigorously checked for contaminants and microbes.

Whilst I don't think it has any importance whatsoever for glycaemic control, I suspect it is to do with mineral waters, As well as containing a variety of different minerals the acidity varies According to a website I just checked they PH ranges from 4-10.4.
 
Proper pH levels are essential to good health. If our blood is too acidic or too alkaline, it can trigger defense mechanisms that may compensate for the problem at hand, but could potentially cause other problems. We can protect ourselves, and possibly turn these problems around, by eating foods with the proper pH.
