Okay, I am not new to this, but I have been given a piece of paper saying that I can have an operation (on the waiting list at least) when my HbA1c level is at 68mmol or below.

Okay, now my meter gives me a 28 day average of 7.4mmol.

What the heck?!

I am a little confused, is there a conversion that I need to do? Anyone point me to the chart please?!

Sorry to ask such a rookie question, but please indulge me, just this once. Thanks

Actually I think it is this one you need.

They are talking about different tests.

The 68mmol/mol is the hb1ac figure (a three month average).
The 7.4mmol/L is a blood glucose reading in this case an averaging of all your individual fingerpricks rather than for instance a fasting blood draw. (A moment in time reading)

If you have a lot of fingerpricks then the average (does your meter do longer than 28 days eg 90 days?) it gives will hopefully be close to an hb1ac but it is only an estimate. You may have missed a number of highs or lows that would change the average.

Ask your surgery when your last hb1ac was and what the figure was? You should be having one every 6 months if stable,or 3 months otherwise. (NICE guidelines) though many only get them yearly:(
