Hi,

I wonder if anyone has an allergy to insulin, as well as being Diabetic, I have addisons disease (on steroids for life), under-active thyroid, asthma, arthritis. I used to just have short acting insulin and didn't do too bad on that, but when I have to raise my steroids when I get ill then my blood sugar goes up a lot, I then started on long acting and just using short acting in the afternoon when my steroids peak. Since staring it I have a very fast heart beat once I have injected and this seems to last then for the period of the insulin, I also had big red blotches when I was on levimir, I changed to Humalog M3 that gave me the same fast heart beat and also made me feel a bit sick and panicky. It seems to be effecting my steroids somehow as I keep having to use more steroid.

I wonder if anyone else has come across this?

Thanks

lesley

Hi Lesley. i know when i was first diagnosed, my care team at the time found that i was allergic to bovine insulins. that is going back a long while - was diagnosed at 4/5 and am 29 now! more recently i had problems with lantus (glargine). i cant remember the reaction to the bovine insulins, but the glargine had me coming up in huge red, painful lumps. my skin has a tendency to be a bit picky on what it reacts to, so did a week on it and yep, you guessed it, i ended up with tennis ball sized lumps!

your reactions sound a heck of a lot more serious however Lesley and best thing you could do is ask around a bit more and also have a chat with your PCT

Hi Lesley,
have you tried either pork or bovine insulin's? They might suit you better.
What steroids are you taking and when? Curious I am as I have addison's as well :)

The only insulin I have had is levimir humalog m3 and novo rapid they all cause the same problems but if I raise my steroids I am ok. I take prednisolone it was 10 mgs a day in the morning, but for the past 18 months I have been having a crisis every month to six weeks and no one knows why I think it may be to do with the insulin.

Hi, I've just switched to Lantus from Levemir and after injecting the Lantus the site really stings and hurts for a good half an hour or more after - this has happened after every injection no matter where I do it. Do not have a rash but does anyone else experience this please? Never had this problem with Levemir.

Hello charlie.
I couldnt tollerate levemir due to the sore lipos raised red blotches.
So I 'do' know what you mean about allergy reaction to the levemir.
Since swapped to animal hypurin porcine isophane (split dosed) am fine
no stinging or site reactions etc...
How long have you been on the lanctus insulin?
Lanctus is more acidic in preparation or the preservatives and can sting so am told...
Maybe this is what you could be experiencing?
If you are concerned with this - can you ask your DSN about this.
Anna.

Is your lantus at room temp? This makes a lot of difference so I have read on many sites.

Hi, been on the Lantus for about 4 weeks - swtched after doing the DAFNE course. It is room temperature so not sure what the problem is. I am seeing my consultant tomorrow for my audit so will ask then. Thanks for the responses.
