Hello Everyone
I was diagnosed with Type1 just a couple of weeks ago which at my very tender age (I am 51) came as something of a shock to the system! I am to be honest still trying hard to come to terms with this and keep asking myself the question...''Why Me?''. Being also a recovering alcoholic though, I am quite used to this question and feel sure that given time, I will indeed come to terms with it and that this whole thing will eventually become second nature just as everyone on my medical team has told me it will. I suppose that the obvious answer to the question ''why me? is in fact...''why not me''. I have learnt over the years not to live my life with one foot in yesterday and one foot in tomorrow and am hopefully thus able to enjoy today so to speak, but this really has come as a hell of a shock .

I am really just introducing myself here and will I'm sure have many many questions over the coming years, but here's one to kick off with. Why is it that on testing when I get out of bed in the morning I get a certain figure and then when I test just before I eat breakfast I get a higher figure, having had only a cup or two of coffee in the meantime? Can it really be that the small amount of milk I take with coffee (I never have had sugar with either tea or coffee) can make such a difference to my b/sugar level?

A little story about genetics to end with for now. I am adopted and consequently whenever I was asked in the past if there was a family history of blood pressure probs or anything medical for that matter, I always had to say that I had no idea. That was until 3 years ago when I met both of my biological parents for the first time. They both live in the USA and my biological father is both a recovering alcoholic and also has Diabetes (type2) also picked up in his 50's! One other thing of considerable interest. I have learnt that on my father's side, I am one sixteenth Native American(Apache) and on a visit to the US to meet them both, I was introduced to a Creek Indian ''elder'' who informed me that there are two conditions that run rife within the Native American race of peoples. One is alcoholism and the other...Diabetes. Interesting yes?

Well that's it from me for now and i apologise about the length of this introduction. I look forward to meany interactions within this site over the years to come. Gos bless all of you.
Mike.
