Alternative Site Testing

I posted this on the T2 Forum (because I'm T2!!), but I'm copying it here because I'm guessing just about all T1s test regularly and will have more experience:

I'm to be given a blood glucose meter next Thursday, though I don't know which one. I hate the idea of finger pricking and would prefer alternative site testing, and whatever meter I'm given I will probably need a differnt lance. If anyone uses AST can they recommend a good lance? THANKS! :)

Andrew
I have been testing on the inside of my forearm for years now. I have a Freestyle Lite meter, which supports this method. Since I never need to track a hypo, I find the AST method perfectly saisfactory for monitoring the overall level of control which I have
Hana
PS your meter will come with a "User's guide" do read it

Andrew, I've not done AST before but if you read the meter manual it will probably tell you to discuss using AST with your health care professionals first.

If you using AST testing you need to be aware that the reading isn't as accurate as finger tip testing.. Due to lag times involved... Which for an T2 similar to Hana isn't a problem but if you are using results to adjust medication can be a problem...

Most meters (meters always come with a finger pricker) now come with an alternative cover for the lancet head normally clear plastic for AST testing, I haven't a clue what the difference is between them though!

I would do some finger sticks testing to start with, but do talk with your DSN about AST.

Thanks for your replies.

I've only just been diagnosed and will hopefully be managed mainly through diet - my GP put me on 500mg of metformin more for the cardio benefits than for a real need for glucose control. My GTT was only just over the diabetic threshold and my HbA1c is 5.4 (36). My GP and DSN haven't suggested I monitor, but I want to for my own peace of mind. I don't think the lag will be an issue, but I'll raise it anyway at my next appointment.
