Hi all,

Been on the Lantus for over a month now and tbh it's not been great I am experiencing quite bad joint and muscle pains since I started it, and looking around the web this seems to be a 'known but unofficially documented side effect if it'. So what are the alternatives to Lantus for a busy active lifestyle baring in mind I exercise 3-4 times a week too.

thanks

Tresiba, levemir. There are several. The problem is getting anyone to agree to let you try it.

Why would trying it be an issue? Also isn't Tresiba 48hrs, meaning you can't tweek the dose on the fly it takes a few days for all changes to settle in, so probably not good for over active folks?

I’ve never had an issue changing basal, if it’s not working ask to try tresiba

@O_DP_T1 you still take tresiba once every 24 hours, but it probably stays in the system for up to 36, which means yes, it can take about three days to see any changes. If you are someone whose activity levels vary significantly from day to day, if you aren't very confident in adjusting your bolus dose, then tresiba may not be the right insulin for you. Levemir is a lot less stable, and I hated it, but for people who are very active, or are doing very different things from day to day, it can be great, because you definitely need to take it twice a day, and will see the effect of any tweaks very quickly. It's also good for people who have very different insulin requirements in day vs night. It's important to consider what will suit your lifestyle best. I love tresiba, I think it is marvellous, but I do the same thing at the same time pretty much every time, and I have the same breakfast and the same lunch every day too, so the fact that it takes some time to see the effect of any changes isn't much of a problem. With levemir the issue I had was that it just wasn't stable enough for me overnight. The 'newer' long acting insulins are definitely more stable, but also don't let my experiences with levemir put you off if you think it sounds right for you - I'm not convinced that I didn't have an issue with something in levemir, because my injection sites used to get ridiculously itchy after it, so that may have contributed.

My activity levels can vary, I use lantus but rarely alter the dose, for illness I do and if it 'appears' not to be working at full strength, which 'can' happen towards the end of the pen, but that's my opinion, not a medical fact.

I find it works well over 24 hours injecting 24u around 10pm each night.

I've not tried the alternatives or splitting the dose.

I have found in your time zone which is 9:05 Pm yesterday since I am in Australia that Lantus is a useless Bolus drug that in the middle of the night at my 3:15 Am on Monday morning my Sugar was in emergency mode and BG was 24.5 Mmol. I gave myself a shot of 21 Units of Novorapid which brought it down to 6.6 Mmol in 3 Hours and 15 Minutes. No Ketones detected. Lantus does not work at all for Sam
