Am I diabetic or not?

Hi, I wrote this a and lost it so I hope it won't be posted twice. I need help! I have had 3 surgeries this month. A Worther's turmor and the face nerve were removed which left my face partially paralyzed. At that time it was descovered my heart rate was low - in the 40s. They decidd I had to have a pace maker asap. 8 days later it was done. I was in severe pain when by the time I got home. One of the leads was poking into my left ventrical. They thought it had poked a hole heart in my heart and I was air lifted to a heart hospital. After many tests and 3 days later it was determined that there was no hole and the lead was repositioned. During this time I noticed my vision was blurry at times. One night I couldn't see the computer screen. My husband and father were diabetic and they complained of blurry vision. I took my blood sugar and it was 221 and it was 179 when I woke the next morning. I thought the high blood sugars were becuse of the trauma I have been through. Other signs and symptoms are: my fater was diabetic, I weigh 190 pounds and am 5 feet 4 inches, very dry skin (that bleeds), light headedness, hungry all the time. I have always drank a lot of water so that can't count. I have continued to take my blood sugars which range from 221 to 122. the majority are in the 150s. I saw my doctor and a glychemoglobintest was done and the HGB A1Cwas only 5.8. Are the high sugars due to trauma? Where do I go from here/

Bev, we can't diagnose as we are not doctors.

However, I'm going to assume you are from North America due to the numbers you give which range from just over 6 to 10.8 (after I converted them). They are high. But you don't say when you tested or if there is a fasting reading in there.

I was diagnosed after 3 fasting blood sugar tests over a 6 week period. Some doctors do a glucose tolerance test to confrim the diagnosis, but not all.

You have been under a lot of physical and emotional stress and that could affect your readings. Cortisol, the stress hormone, affects how your body uses the insulin it produces. As could the numerous medications I will assume you have been given. The HbA1c is on the high side of the normal range (but I'd be very happy with it), but that is an average and does not pick up the full range of the sugar readings and is heavily skewed towards the last few weeks anyway.

With a family history of diabetes it wouldn't hurt to cut the carbs you eat - bread, pasta, potato, rice and all flour products. Take a look at low carb and low glycaemic index diets, they can't harm your health. The hunger may be carb cravings, I was almost always hungry before I cut the carbs.

Hope you are feeling better soon, you have been through a lot. I'd say that you needed to heal from your recent surgeries traumas and then look at the other stuff once you are either stable on your long term meds and/or have come off any temporary ones.

Thanks for your reply Spiral. I try to do both fasting and after meals blood sugars. My higheat 221 was about 4 hours after I ate and the 179 was fasting. As they are high I try to do more of them fasting as I am afraid of what they might be after I eat. I didn't mention it, but I went on a 1200 calorie diabetic diet after my first high sugar reading. I have lost 6 pounds. I am getting better readings - sorta of. Todays fasting was 145.

Bev, if you are healing surgical wounds this is not the time to go on a calorie controlled diet or a weight reduction diet of any kind.

That doesn't mean that your shouldn't try to improve your diet, you need to make sure you have enough good quality nutrition (vitamins, minerals and protien etc) for your body to repair itself.

Your priority needs to be healing and healing takes a lot energy.
