Am I going mad?

First off, hi there, I'm new to this forum, my mum convinced me to join after a string of difficulties this year. I'm 23, been a Type 1 for 15 years now, since I was 8 years old. My control has been okay over that time, my hba1c always averaged between 7-8.
About 5 years my control slacked off a bit when I went to university. I always enjoyed a few pints, and uni life meant I was always sleeping in until the afternoon, meaning I'd not have regular times to inject myself with lantus. I'd also panic when I had high blood sugars and immediately take insulin to drop them quite quickly, which I was later told was a bad way of handling things. These bad blood sugars took a toll on me mentally and I became quite depressed, and often thought about taking my own life (thoughts I've only recently managed to get over).
Then I started to settle down, I now work as a teacher and life has become quite a bit more routine.

Which is obviously where everything started to go wrong. In April I was told I had background retinothapy. I freaked out, presuming I was going blind. I saw an occupational health doctor at work last month who just made matters worse, telling me quite apathetically that "I probably have other organ damage that we can't see".

The real kicker that has made me finally join this forum was that today when I got out of bed I experienced a split-second "falling feeling" in my chest after having a drop in my blood sugar. My silly little mind has spent all day convincing me I've got some kind of heart disease, which was further fuelled by what I swear was some kind of momentary skip in my heartbeat this evening, and now I'm convinced that some kind of heart attack is heading my way and it's driving me to despair. Does anyone else get these gloomy feelings? Does anyone on here have any kind of heart condition caused by diabetes?

Sorry to vent, I feel like I needed to get this all off my chest.

Hi jah620 and welcome to the forums.

As you already know, diabetes can cause a lot of problems and it's very easy to blame the condition for everything else that's wrong.

I'm not saying that you don't have a related problem but an erratic heartbeat can be caused by many things, even stress.

Best to get yourself down to doc and get it checked out.

Hi @jah620 and welcome to the forum.

I have had diabetic retinopathy and have no other complication from diabetes and I'm otherwise healthy, I honestly think your Occupational Health Dr was wrong to say this to you, if you have a good read of the following it has a wealth of information on diabetic retinopathy and offers some great advice too:

Please consider that anxiety can also give you very similar symptoms. I am sure all of this has created lots of anxiety for you. I hope you do not give yourself to hard of a time about not being in the best of control in the past. You are human and it is so difficult.
As far as other organ problems that does not seem very helpful, my question for him would be ...If that is so, besides controlling my sugars what can we do about it before it gets worse? You should be clear that you can do your part but that you may need assistance . The good news is that some complications can be reversed and managed. You can slow the progression of retinopathy through good management :)

Like Noblehead I have got background retinopathy and have had it for over 10 years and in all honesty it causes me absolutely no problems whatsoever. You do obviously have to be aware of the potential for it getting worse but as long as you try and keep your levels under control and attend your eye screening it may well not get any worse or if it does it can be treated.
I hope this cheers you up a little bit and certainly I think we have all been in bad places due to our T1. You are certainly not alone there.

I have background retinopathy for many and it hasn't changed in 20 years,as many have said keeping good Blood/Glucose control will certainly help.
