Type of diabetes
Type 2
I had been unwell for over 3 years. Rapidly putting on weight, retaining fluid, swollen everything, thrush, infections. Pain in legs feet and arms and hands. Then I went to Rheumatology who took routine blood tests, blood glucose results were 15.9.. on the basis of this one test - it is the ONLY blood test I have had done, I was told to go to my GP - who immediatley put me on Metformin, as with most meds it made me ill. I have been prescribed Gliclizide (Nazdol) which made me really ill. I have not taken any meds for 4 days now, and bg is 7.9 this morning. Since being given dx of dm2 this is the lowest it has been .
My question is this: Should I have had other tests to determine what my dm2 is? I mean IR or not producing insulin at all. I have only had one blood test, and as I am typing this I realise I wasnt given the results.
Obviously I have to think for the doctor as well as myself I have realised, so what questions should I be asking, what tests should I be asking for, is it important to get an appointment with an endoctinologist/diabetes specialist at the hospital. I am not happy with the slap happy treatment at the doctors surgery. Please if anyone can advise.. I would appreciate it.

The tests for Type 1 are c-peptide and antiGAD. I insisted soon after initial diagnosis and got them done (I did have to put the request in writing - nothing came of the verbal request). The tests were positive and I was put straight on insulin.

They should NOT be witholding test results from you. Ask for them
