Am I Pre-Diabetic?

Hi All,

I am 31 year old male (174 cm tall 72 KG). Recently I did a blood test and it gave the following results:
I do a lot of weight training and am quite well-built.

Serum Cholestrol - 5.5
Blood Sugar (Fasting) - 5.5

My GP called me and told it's not good. But he didn't tell me that I am a pre-daibetic.

I am very concerned since then. Am I a pre-diabetic?

Cheers

Hi Av,

Blood sugar Looks OK to me mate, should be between 4 and 7 so yours sits perfect. So I don't think you are pre diabetic.

Your Cholestorol is bit high I think but this can be sorted with your diet and excercise. Mine was 5.5 about 2 months ago but with some moderate excercise (walk at lunch time at work and out with the dog for 1/2 hour in the evening) and cutting down on fried food, marg, bread etc it has dropped to 3.3.

You are clearly not overweight so i wouldn't be too worried at all, just make some slight changes to bring the cholestorol level down and all should be fine. Do you perhaps eat too much protien with the weight training?

Hi Carl,

Thanks very much for your reply. So I could conclude that a pre-diabetic condition is only when the fasting blood sugar is above 7 ? Great!.

Yeah I started some swimming and running now. I'll check my cholestrol in 2 months.

Yes, I take protein suppliment after my weight training. Should I stop that?

Cheers

Firstly no one on this Forum should be telling you if you are pre-Diabetic or not. Diagnosis is not allowed. Those are the Forum rules. However we are allowed to give you information and advice in relation to your question.

Serum Cholesterol levels
It is insufficient data to just go on total serum cholesterol levels when deciding your risk factors for having a heart attack or a stroke. Your GP should have the other details which will give a better indication. HDL, LDL, Ratio etc.

Those numbers should not be looked at on their own as other factors need to be taken into consideration as well. These risks are your BMI, whether or not you have high blood pressure, Diabetes and various other conditions. Your age, sex, family history, your ethnic profile.

Using all the relevant data then you should be told if you are at high, low or medium risk of gettinG CVD (cardiovascular disease) in the next ten years.

Fasting Blood Glucose levels.

A fasting blood glucose level in normal individuals varies depending on the laboratory that is used. Generally a reading between 3.6 - 6 mmol/l is considered normal.

Those with levels between 6.1 - 6.9 mmol/l would have impaired fasting glucose (pre-diabetes) That means that those levels would be a risk for developing type 2 Diabetes.

A probable diagnosis of Diabetes is made if the FBG levels are 7 mmol/l or higher.

It should be pointed out that the normal value ranges vary from laboratory to laboratory so therefore you need to discuss ALL your results with your GP. Only then can you know exactly what your diagnosis is. If you are or are not pre-Diabetic.

You should also know that there are many other diseases and conditions which can result in elevated blood glucose levels. That is why your results should be discussed with your GP.

Not everything is always Diabetes related. Please do not assume anything where a diagnosis is required.
