Hi - my HBA1C is 40 - I know I was eating too much of suger and meals with low gaps between meals. my BMI is 27.

my question is : is 40 HBA1C normal - or it's prediabetic, as when I check NHS, UK sites - 42 onwards is considered as prediabetic, but when i check US sites 40 meaning 5.8 is prediabetic? I feel bit stressed and not sure if I consider myself as prediabetic.

any advice and recommendations please.

The USA and the U.K. have different cuts off for prediabetes. Fundementally it is a scale from metabolically healthy to full blown diabetes. There’s no magic switch at one number verses the one next to it. And it’s definitely better the further down the scale you are regardless of any formal category wherever you live. So take this as advance warning and make some changes now to move yourself along the scale in the right direction. Less sugar, fewer carbs especially grain type ones as opposed to veg ones and more filling meals to mean fewer feeding times a day And be as active as you are able.

Thanks and appreciate your response. last year my HBA1C was 37 and in 2014 it was 37 as well. this year it came 40 - only change in life style was i gain 5kg weight and my cholestrol was bit higher - it was not significantly higher but doctor advised to do some excercises and have right meals for that. it might be i got higher HBA1C due to weight gain or higher cholestrol.

i have started excercises, trying to lose weight and also started low carb diet and will do test again in 3 months time.

The raise in weight can be both a symptom and a cause of rising hba1c. Cholesterol is more a symptom than a cause. Drop some carbs move more and you should see improvements in it all.

The label isn’t so important; if you know you eat too much bad food and your BMI is a little high, being stricter with your diet and doing more exercise would be a great idea and hopefully prevent any issues :)

While you should definitely watch your levels, HbA1cs are not necessarily static and can be affected by a variety of non-diabetic issues e.g. health, some medications, etc ... and not only weight, diet or inactivity . So make sure you're not seeing a regular rise in your levels, maybe just a few possible up and down wobbles.

thanks - yes - i took my HBA1C as warning and started having diet with low carb and doing regular excercise. now it needs patience .. i am waiting and will do a private test in Feb or march 2023.

Thanks Robbity - very good advise. actually in my last year .. i was not doing any exercise, doing late night shifts, little stress factor involved, eating too much sugery items and bakery items, then weight gained as well . now i have changed all clean food, excercise etc.. i hope i am not too late. will see in next test
