Hi everyone, new to the forum. I went to see my diabetic nurse today and she was really pleased with me because my Hba1c in may was off the scale at 121 mmol and my last test on 10th August my hba1c was 37 mmol. I was taking 2000mg a day of metformin, 320mg of gliclazide, and 25mg of sitagliptin. Now, about a month or a month and a half before my last test I stopped taking my Aripiprazole which is known to give you diabetes. I was still eating all the sweet stuff every day as I guess I'm addicted to it. My diabetic nurse said I will be diabetic for life and I was lucky I didn't have a heart attack or stroke because of my hba1c and because my globules we're 10 something and they were supposed to be 1 something. My question is, is it wise for me to stop taking the diabetes medication because I believe I don't have it anymore?

Why do you believe you don't have Diabetes anymore ?

Do the 2000mg Metformin, 320mg Gliclazide and 25mg Sitagliptin just rattle around inside you doing nothing ?

I think the aripiprazole is what gave me diabetes. Since stopping that my sugars are normal. I have also cut the metformin down to 1000mg for the last 3 weeks or so, mainly because I don't eat anything until about 5pm so I can't fit the other 1000mg in after food. My nurse thinks it's a bad idea but I'm just not convinced.

I would seek some proper advice on this from a Medical Professional, although as the drug is known to raise BG in some patients, and now you've stopped taking it your BG's have dropped there is likely a good chance it was the cause.

I doubt that a Diabetes Nurse will be properly trained in this area, so seeking further medical opinions would be a good idea.

I will speak to the diabetic doctor about it. If I did just do it for a month what's the worst that could happen? The 121 hba1c was my first diabetes blood test so I'm fairly new to it.

Please talk to your Dr before stopping any medication
