Am I talking myself into this....??

Afternoon all,

I think I'm going a bit bonkers - can anyone reassure me?

Following two fasting glucose tests over the last couple of weeks, I have been told by the practice nurse that I 'definitely' have type 2 (first result was 11.9, second came back at 13.2). I am awaiting a call from the surgery to go and see my GP to discuss what happens next.

However, I'm just a bit anxious about a particular symptom I have had for some months now, and which seems to be getting worse. I do have a rather low blood pressure and frequently suffer dizzy spells on standing (especially if I have not had much to eat or drink). These incidents usual resolve if I sit still for a couple of minutes, and I have always attributed these to a low BP. Over the last few weeks, I seem to feel almost permanently light headed and "out of it". This morning at work, I was walking down the corridor and suddenly came over very peculiar, I stopped dead and just sat on the floor!! I then apparently (I have no recollection of anything from this point on) listed over to one side and fainted - very elegantly, I am told! I woke up a few seconds later and didn't realise anything had happened and couldn't figure out why I was laying on a grubby floor! I sat up and promptly went again and this time was "out" for a few minutes. After a glass of water and a few sips of Coke, I got up and walked slowly back to my desk. This was about 3 hours ago and I still feel really really odd - very light headed and vacant. I have eaten some chicken pasta and fruit for lunch, which has made me feel no worse but no better either.

Is anyone able to tell me if this could be due to a glucose level thing - I'm reluctant to think so, as it would seem my blood test results aren't particularly high compared to those of some posts I have read on here. Maybe it's just that I am falling apart at the seams now that I've hit the big four-0 !!!!

Many thanks for any help anybody is able to offer, and apologies for rambling on!

You really need to talk to your doctor about this!!Could be several things and he is the person qualified to help you with this.Your blood sugar results are high enough to cause symptoms depending on how long they have been like that.Well controlled should be down at less than 7,preferably round about 5 or 6.I hope you get on OK at the doctors and he is able to explain your symptoms.

Hi Jesben,

Like Sue says, we are not really qualified to give this kind of advice, so definately go and see the Dr. I hope you are feeling better by the way!

To be honest, what you describe sounds like too little sugar, rather than too much...but if you are type 2, and aren't taking anything for it, then this is very unlikely. Just to share experiences, when my bllod sugar is high I generally feel awful. Dry mouthed, thick headed tired etc. I have never fainted though.....and never, ever managed to do so in an elegant fashion!

The only practical thing I can suggest is either nagging teh Dr/nurse to give you a blood glucose monitor, so if you feel like this again, you can do a quick check and find out what the situation is. If you are still feeling rough, and can't get an appointment for a few days, you can buy them quite cheaply from the chemists...but check that you get one that has a few test strips free with it, or it will be no good. Not an ideal solution, but for £20, might be worth teh piece of mind.
Good luck!
