Type 1 Am I the only one?

Sometimes I give myself a hypo by shoving a unit or two extra on top of my meal time dose just so that I can justify eating something **** and sugary and nice. Am I the only one? Surely not...

I never deliberately have a hypo. How many carbs do you eat in a meal? Sometimes I feel very hungry and have an extra serve of carbs, which of course I cover with an appropriate amount of insulin. However, I never give the extra insulin and then eat the extra food later when I get low because it is a bit dangerous and easy to eat too much if you see that you're having a hypo. I also give myself permission to eat lots of "unhealthy" foods (i.e. those that are typically high sugar/high fat/high GI) because I can manage my blood sugars after. For example, yesterday I had a waffle for lunch! I bolused 8u and my numbers were all 4's to 6's for 2 hours after. I still get to enjoy treats, but I know that I am doing so safely.

I'm sure you're not the only one.

But maybe try changing your mindset a bit. You don't have to justify something sweet and you don't have to be hypo to be allowed a treat. Why not just bolus for pudding and eat it, without being hypo? That way you will get to actually enjoy it without having to wolf it down because you are low.

Deliberately forcing yourself hypo is going to be doing bad things to your hypo awareness, your glycaemic variation, your vulnerability to hypos afterwards. Stop telling yourself sweet things are forbidden, they aren't. Just carb count and bolus for them like anything else.
