Dawn, I don't know what to say - except that you are certainly a survivor!

Did they give you a monitor to test your bg levels when you were first diagnosed Type 2? I'll bet they didn't! If you'd been able to test yourself on a regular basis you might have got them to realise there was something wrong much earlier. But if you weren't getting the info/help from your HCPs - not much you could do by yourself.

Let's hope it's 'onwards and upwards' from here

Good luck, and let us know how you go on.

Re: doctors told blood moniter not needed 4 type 2

correct i was told no need to moniter sugar levels as type 2 as u have blood test every 3 months, good job i brought one as the day i did it measured 21 i rang my doctor and was told i must have read it wrong take a extra metformin. next day went to work drank 8 litres of water measured my sugar when got home 32 rang nhs helpline, told get to hospital now.My doc has now changed his policy he now suggests you get a monitor with type 2 though he says it not norm to go from type 2 to type 1 in 4 weeks from diagnosis. At least i may have helped someone else

Hi dawn!

You poor thing! You are not weird - the NHS simply let you down! I'm afraid it's all too common a story on this forum. I was also misdiagnosed Type 2 and only narrowly avoided your awful experience - although I was very ill. I ended up buying a monitor and got told off by the nurse for not following her 'Type 2 don't need to test' mantra - I tested and was 26 followed by 22!

Your doctor still doesn't seem to understand - you haven't gone from Type 2 to Type 1 in a few weeks - you were never Type 2 in the first place - he just misdiagnosed you through his ignorance of diabetes and made you very ill as a consequence!

I am starting to despair at the poor diagnoses of adults with Type 1 - misdiagnosis as Type 2 seems to be very common - even when it's staring them in the face. I am trying to think if there's anything we,as a community, can do to raise awareness of this with the medical profession. Anyone got any thoughts?

Best of luck, Dawn, and I hope you're feeling better soon!
