AMAZING first clinic visit!

My head is still in the clouds... I went into the clinic and it was my GP doing the clinic not a nurse, first big sigh of relief. He looked at me and he couldn't speak with surprise as I had walked in and not been in the wheelchair. He sat me down and asked what I had done. I told him, I had gone against everything he advised me to. I was testing, and was low carbing. He gave me the biggest smile and said "thank God you researched". I told him the absolute truth about everything, except that I am on the Newcastle Diet. I did ask him if he would support me if I did it, he has promised to research it, and consider it, but my control is so good, why would I want to do it? - OOPS :lolno: I was so shocked that he is fully behind the low carb Atkins approach, to the point he is trying to secure funding to trial low carbs in diabetics, sadly he is not hopeful. He weighed me (weight a tightly guarded secret until my weekly weigh in on my ND in the weight loss forum). I just blurted out that as I had done so well would he now prescribe strips? He said YES! They don't do the SD Codefree on the NHS so I am getting a brand spanking mew meter. He asked me how many strips I use a day, and I told him, he will cover all my strips as long as I promise to cut down the testing in a couple of months if my next HbA1c is below 6, I agreed. No change in medication, and no clinic visits for two months - YIPEE!!

Me too didie. He did tell me they have to follow the NHS rules and he is so against them, but has little choice, hence why he wants funding to trial low carbs. He has seen so many patients like me who have done well low carbing, and he knows high carbs just fuel complications. He said that strips to T2 only go to people who take this really seriously, as I have, and then there is no problem funding them. I said I wanted to stay on Metformin for the preventative measures and he is happy with that. All my hard work is paying off. I am so, so SO happy!

He is a lovely man, I have always got on brilliantly with him. His surgery's always run late because he listens to people, gives them time. If you show him you will do what it takes, he will walk the entire road with you. There are other GP's in the practice, but I never see them, only this one, who I know I can talk to about anything. The strips is amazing, as last visit is was a big no, we don't prescribe them. I guess showing him I was serious, enabled him to walk this journey with me, and aide me as much as possible.

Absolutely it is. If our PCT can see we mean business then they know that long term we will cost the practice less, so are happy to ensure that we remain on this road. I think this is a huge lesson that we can show to newly diagnosed who like we did, feel afraid and alone.

You, xxy and BF have been my biggest supporters, helpers and saviours. It is you three along with Jeanne who have given me the support and kick when I needed it. That along with all the others who have offered advice and support along the way. I owe this forum so much, and I mean that. Thank you Grazer. Now mop the tears wet wool smells something awful :lol:

I can't take any credit, my GP said he knew this approach worked by other patients, hence the attempt to get funding. I am just another that proved his theory. Thank you swimmer, the support here is what has got me where I am.

I was dreading clinic today, as soon as I knew it was my GP I immediately felt much better, but I couldn't image in my wildest dreams have imagined how it would turn out.
