Hi I have developed a Charcot foot plus it has an ulcer on bottom of the foot. The consultant says there is not an operation to save the foot, so the only solution is below the knee amputation. I was wondering about after the operation what to expect from rehab and how soon can a prosthetic leg be worn etc . Thank you

I'm sorry to hear you'll lose part of your leg @lizziehit .
Let me tag @Ushthetaff for you, he may be able to answer some of your questions.

Wish you all the best!

Hi sorry to hear about your issues with your foot , I had a below knee amputation in 2014 , firstly let me say I never thought it would ever stop me walking and it hasn’t, , the rehab is an on going process, they will initially fit you with a basically an inflatable balloon for want of a better word and a metal cage , this is just to get you upright and standing on your “ feet “ , your are measured for a prosthetic , you will find that you will have a few prosthetics initially as it takes a while for swelling to reduce , there will be several visits to the prosthetic dept , and let me say I have experienced nothing but a brilliant service from all involved ,
one thing I will say is keep positive , it helps no end , yes it will take getting use to but I’m guessing you struggle with an ulcer on your foot to walk without pain , once you get a prosthetic and get use to it there should be no pain ,
it’s not the end of the world it’s different I will say that but after a while it’ll become “ normal”
please please please do not hesitate to message me if your having a bad day , need advice , or just need a wee blether ( that’s a wee chat where I come from ) ,,
plus don’t forget to get your PIP forms filled out as you should qualify for it which is a help in keeping your independence and mobility,
keep your chin up and let me know how you get on
