Mind you, places that go through famines tend to have large rural/ working populations, and diets tend to be starch heavy in such places as carbs are cheap and good for manual labour etc, so maybe it's something to do with a culture of starchy staples leading to diabetes and vulnerability to specific crop failures.</p></blockquote><p></p>
