How Do,

Just been for my annual review. my last average 3 month test was 8.1 and now it is 7.9. most comments directed to my diabetic nurse were received with apathy! Is 7.9 a good score ? any help greaatfully received! I did go down the route of, i still feel like pants 2 hours after eating something-but not much response came back!

7.9 is a bit high (assuming that you meant 7.9%); targets are < 7.5% (<6.5% if heart risk).

Advice would depend on your medication, BG readings, diet, etc. Without knowing any details, it would have to be generic advice along the lines of: Exercise more, lose weight if overweight*, ask your GP for more/different medication

* through diet and exercise (conventional medical opinion); I agree with the opinion of the EULE e.V. (euleev.de - German only I'm afraid) that there is no credible way of achieving this.

Hi Flobadob, I started at 8.2% and went down to 5.9% on diet and exercise alone in 3 months, so it does work. I'm currently still not on meds, with HbA1c of between 5 and 5.5%. I don't low carb, but I have reduced carbs of about 150 to 180 grams a day (compared to guideline levels of 300) I also stick to low GI carbs, so avoid the starchy carbs like white flour products, rice and pasta, (although I have a small amount of Basmati rice once a week and a small amount of wholewheat spaghetti), and I stick to boiled new potatos.
I also do about 10 minutes hard exercise about 45 mins to an hour after each main meal, just as my BG will be peaking. Seems to help in bringing it down more quickly.
Don't know what diet you're on, but a change might get those %s down a bit.
Good luck

Hi,

7.9% is technically above the recommended guidelines. But it's still a good result in my eyes, especially as you haven't been diagnosed long and your previous hba1c was 8.1% so you are making a steady improvement, especially as your being reviewed every 3 months. It's always recommended to bring your BG's down slowly to avoid any damage to your eyes or aggrevate any diabetes complications.

Many people tend to judge on the result at a click of a finger, but it's always useful to use the result previous to judge which direction your heading and as it's gone down then in the last 3 months you must have made some changes for the better! good for you.

So yes it's not perfect but I would say your doing great, keep bringing it down and you'll soon have a result many others would envy :)

Hi Flobadob,

I agree with others. Down is better than up so well done.

You don't give us much detail to go on though. Are you on any medication? are you overweight and, if so, have you lost any? What kind of diet are you following? Are there any other factors?

It's not anyone being nosey but I've found the more detail I give, the more and better responses I get.
