Annual test today!

Got my first set of annual tests today, HBA1c, Lipis, TFT's, Renal, Bone etc etc.

I'm crossing fingers for a very low HBA1c so I can relax the low carbing a bit as I am continuing to lose weight (now 10st 5lb from my starting point of 11st 7lb when I was diagnosed 2 to 3 months ago).

That weight is too low for me and shows no sign of the drop stopping, at 5 ft 7 in I'm not the tallest bloke in the world and have no desuire to become a short-**** skinny weakling.

My BG readings tend to be in the 4.5 to 5.5 range, with the occassional 6 a couple of hours after meals, so I'll ne interested to see the rleationship between that and the HBA1c.

I'll report back in two weeks :D

In the meantime, anyone know how I can stop the weight loss? My GP reckons loads of veg, but we all know the calorific value of veg is low except for those where the carb count is higher.

Hi Guv,
Your story is very similar to mine almost Identical in the weight loss department. Seeing a dietitian turned me round she put me on a diet much higher in fats fresh cream full fat milk, I get through about 8 pints of milk a week, I use butter rather than spreads and eat cheese 2 or 3 times a week.I think on the high carb low fat thread there was a few Ideas of hi cal snacks. I'm around 11st 3lb now, originally my weight was around 11st 5lb and dropped to 10st 6lb.I seemed to have peaked now and my weight has remained stable for the last couple of weeks. Bs control seems ok, like you my main concern is the cholesterol. I'm taking plant sterols which hopefully will go some way to help I definitely dont want to go back on statins  look forward to seeing your results I think mine are due in around 3 weeks time I will post mine when I get them.

Best of luck Graham

Hi Graham, that's interesting. Can I ask, are you low-carbing too?

I'm wodnering hwo you can drink a pint of milk a day and not have it affect your readings as that would represent an additional 28g of carbs per day to me?

What's the problem with Statins by the way, as my GP has mentioned them to me previously...?

Hi Guv
I use 200ml in my morning porridge which raises Bs slightly but not enough to cause me any concern, I usually test pre lunch and Bs levels have been 5.0 to 5.5. the rest of the milk is spread throughout the day. I am low carbing thats why I am able to tolerate the milk I could not have drunk it on my previous diet prescribed by the practise nurse. Low carbing has given me a lot more control over my Bs and is keeping me off meds. Statins are another story when I was first diagnosed I was told that it was the norm to put diabetics on them. I was given Simvastatin  40mg along with aspirin and Bp meds. At first all seemed ok then My calf muscles started aching, worst in a morning I got neck and shoulder aches I started having probs getting out of bed my legs were that bad to make matters worse I started having nightmares and I was getting depressed. According to leaflet the symptoms I was getting was a very rare complication. But a quick search in the internet told a different story, within days of coming off simvastatin  the depression had eased nightmares gone and most of the muscular aches gone. Unless your cholesterol is very high I'd try to keep off statins just google statins and you'll be surprised how many people have probs with them. Best of luck with your tests its hard being an underweight T2

Hi Guv,
Breakfast usually porridge with seeds and nuts. Main meals meat or fish veg and a few potatoes
for sweets berries with either Ice cream or fresh cream, sugar free jelly and cream, fresh cream sponge cake, small tin fruit in juice.Lunch Cold meat salads, eggs bacon sausages mushrooms, omelettes.Supper half slice toast, melba toast cheese crackers.Snacks nuts limited amounts of fruit apple pear orange but no bananas. cheese and crackers.Due to my my lack of ability in the kitchen I vary my diet by eating out 3 or 4 times a week the place I go to have got used to my dietary needs so I manage to get low carb meals. For some reason the meals I have don't cause my Bs to rise to high.I do overindulge  on carbs on the odd occasions and it shows in my Bs levels.

All the best
Graham

That's interesting Graham, I'm surprised (amazed!) that you can get away with eating a fresh cream sponge cake though? Is it some sort of special brand, as I'd imagine that'd be loaded with sugar?

Hi Guv,
The cake is a very light sponge your right about the sugar  but I only have it after a almost zero carb meal. Yesterday for example I had a mixed grill and veg no spuds, the meal was at lunchtime when I know I will be active later.Bs reading before dinner was 5.7 I can live with that seeing it was my main meal of the day. I don't know what it is with milk but my body seems to cope with it and has little effect on Bs levels. As for being "Amazed " I think my dietitian was a bit taken aback she had said that due to the change of diet I might have to go on meds but after looking at my Bs levels after a month on the diet she said they were fine no need for meds. I might just be lucky but then again us underweight T2s are far from the norm.

All the Best

Here is a recipe for a low carb sponge.

200g ground almonds
5 eggs
4oz unsalted butter
a little vanilla essence
a little almond essence
2 tablespoons granulated sugar substitute eg splenda, steviva blend, hermesetas granular
one teaspoon baking powder
a tablespoon water
grated rind one lemon

beat everything to a pulp. put in two sandwich tins which have been greased and lined with baking parchment. Bake at 160 degrees for 30 mins.

Take out, cool, fill with whipped double cream. Enjoy. 6 carbs a slice. Does 10 slices.

From Mr Congelton's recipe at Dr B's forum.

Thanks for that Katharine, just worked out the carbs for the cake I had, it came out at 12 carbs per slice, so the recipe halves the carbs. Maybe I'll allow myself a couple of potatoes next time I have cream sponge using your recipe.

Good Idea Katharine add a bit of flavour to the gravy

That's great Graham but I honestly think apricots, strawberries or raspberries would go better with the cake.

Hi Katharine, thanks for posting that I appreciate it :D I'll also check ou the forum too (Dr B?)

Graham - Looking at what you eat, it's actually not that different form me outside of the extra milk. You're having more fruit than I can manage to squeeze in but otherwise...

Hi Gov,
Looking at your BG its better than mine. I'm getting 5.0 to 6.0 on low carbing, its probably the fruit that makes that difference so your wise to keep off it. I'm 6ft tall, so height to weight ratio I'm probably not much different to you, but to maintain my weight I do tend to pile up my plate at meal times. Have you seen a dietitian :?: if you got referred to a good one that could help.
The cake recipe that Katherine posted sounds good but maybe for me I would find that to much to have in the house too tempting

Graham

Don't knock it till you've tried it Katharine you could develop a liking for it given time :D :D :D

Cake and gravy? Mmm reminds me of kippers and custard.

Sorry Guv your thread seems to have been hijacked. It was Katharine that started it

lol no worries both, nothing like a bit of banter :D

I hit 10st 3lbs today :( This is starting to get out of hand now, but I feel stuck between a rock and a hard place, eat more BS goes high, eat less, lose weight hand over fist.

I haven't been referred to a dietitian yet, when I see the GP I need to ask for that as she obviously isn't going to volunteer it!

Trouble is I know the answer really, low carb, high fat meals, it's just a question of finding them!
