Hi

Had a good nosey around here and it seems a great place for balanced info.

Quick history - had gestational diabetes with both pregnancies - went away after the first and not entirely sure it went away after the second a year ago. Was diet controlled (just) with first pregnancy, but went on insulin midway through second - which was stopped after birth. Went back 6 weeks after baby for a glucose tolerance test, but they wouldnt do it as my fasting level was over 7 - this was at the pregnancy assessment unit so they had their ow protocol to follow. Was referred back to GP who did full range of blood tests 6 months later - HbA1C was 6.4 and fasting level was 6.5. Tests repeated 3 months later - fasting 6.2 and HbA1C was under 7 - no sure of exact figure. This led to referal to hospital for another GTT (different hosp) which came back at 13.4 - told that anything over 11 was classed as 'diabetic'.

Now that I can understand, but I dont think that my HbA1C levels are too bad (from what I read on here) - so there isnt a great reduction to be seen - maybe below 6, I dont know??? Got appointment with diabetic nurse (first appt) on 7th May, with a blood test this week to get current levels, etc. Quick phone chat discussed diet and exercise - and I am about 1 and 3/4 stones overweight - have lost over a stone since last year, but I dont see how I can be truely diabetic!!!

Any advice from anyone - not really sure what my questions are, but I guess I have to go through the process of 3 monthly appointments to see what is happening - I am 38 and there is history of diabetes in the family - but with older relations. Not sure if it is a good thing to get this now or in later life - but at least I can try to control it now before it gets alot worse. :)

I have been doing some testing and wanted to run them by you lot.

My fasting levels are between 6.1 and 6.8

My after breakfast (2 hours) have been between 6.9 and 9.3

My after lunch have been around the 4-5 levels

My after tea have been between 7 and 8.4

Am I testing at the right times (2 hours after meal) or should I be looking at the levels before I eat??

Any help would be appreciated

Andy

hello andy,
the postprandial (after a meal) results will show much more clearly
how well your body is controlling blood sugars.
Any test before a meal won't really mean much unless you then compare it
to an after meal test.

all the best,
the fuzz.
