Hi,I went to see the diabetic nurse today. She told me my fasting level was 7.9 and now I have to go to the hospital for a Glucose Tolerance Test. She couldnt really tell me if i have diabetes only that she will know for sure after the test.Is 7.9 high for the results after a fasting blood test or is that within the normal range?
Thanks

I think normal range is 4-6 and pre-diabetes is 6-7. Anything above 7.0 is usually classed as diabetic. But I am no expert, someone more experienced will clarify.

Hi essgirl
It's higher than they'd like and obviously if it continues you'd be running risks with your health. They're doing the next test to make sure, presumably. Others on here will know more about the glucose tolerance test. Thing is, if that's a fasting one, it's going to be higher after meals. But only the docs can tell you what's going on for sure. We don't diagnose as we don't know you or your medical history. So let us know what happens. I just thought I'd answer your post so you didn't feel ignored! (EDIT: someone just beat me to it, but I'll leave it here anyway.)

7.9 would be in the range for a diabetic diagnosis althought most gp practices will carry out a glucose tolernace that involves fasting overnight next morning have lood taken then given a measured amount of gluocose to drink then another blood test takem 2 hours later.
fasting 7.1 or above
2 hour mark 11.1 or above
either of these will confim a diabetic diagnosis

Hi,thanks for your responses.
I guess i will just have to wait for the results of the Glucose test. The nurse told me it was highly likely that i do have diabetes as I had mild gestational diabetes 12 years ago,but i was told at the time that it didnt mean I would go on to develop Diabetes later in life. However I have since read that I do run a higher risk. But on the plus side its taken my mind off my other health problems lol,and I have learnt a lot by reading the posts on here.
