Hi all,
Hope everyone is well and looking after themselves!!
Just wondered if anyone had ever heard of having anti bodies against insulin?
All answers and any explantions of this are really welcome!!
Thanks
Mindii xx

Hi, I heard of it about 25 years ago. A girl with T1 had medication flown in from Germany because she had antibodies to insulin. She eventually had some kind of meds that worked o.k. Didn
't have a good outcome in the long run though. She died in her twenties of a heart attack. I am sure meds today are much better though. Family didn't look after her very well either. Helga

Cheers Helga!!
My DSN has magicked this one as I seem to stop responding to my insulin after about 2 1/2 - 3 yhears not fun! :(
But so far no tests have been done so I've kinda been left wondering what the hell happens now!! Hopefully not the same as the girl you mentioned though! O she said anti-bodies so I immediately thought allergic AARRGH
apparently not though?? So I'm still in the bloody dark and really scared all I wanted was a wee bit help tightening up my control so I could try for a family - a year on still not doing so I'm ready to go in screaming at them whilst throwing all the injections and insulin vials they've given me this past 8 months at them. :? Maybe not!!!

Hello Mindi

Animal insulin might be able to come to your rescue as some people are just not able to tolerate the modern human type insulins but find that they are ok on the animal. But saying this, there are those who dont do all that well with animal insulin but are ok with human type.

You must find out exactly what your antibodies to insulin are?

If you google ' insulin antibodies, plasma exchange' you will be able to read of a case presented in a diabetic journal of a person who had plasma exchange done last year I think to treat antibodies.
You are not on your own with all this, there are others who find that they have extreme resistance to insulin working for them. Some even have to keep swopping insulins every week and do a rotation because the insulins seem to stop working.

Wow!! weekly rotations?? That sounds like major mayhem!
Hopefully this wont happen.
I have asked for a change to animal insulin as i feel like i have tried just about every human insulin. I even had a box of animal insulin in my hand the last time i was at the hospital, then the DSN went to speak to the doc and came back with Apidra!!! Not amused! I'm going to see the doctor on the 27th so will have it out with him about it then. I'll ask about the anti bodies when I go because as far a I know no tests have been done to find out if this is a wild assumption or really happening!!????
Good to know that this can happen but not good to know people suffer!!
Thanks all
