Hi.

I'm on antibiotics (yet again!) for a recurring abscess that I get as a complication of diabetes/PCOS/my body generally hating me.

I have to take them on an empty stomach or an hour before food. My question is, does a cup of tea count or not? I have it with sweetener and a small amount of milk... is that too much 'food' to be considered an empty stomach or is it ok?

Anybody have any idea?

Thanks!

Fluids don't count and I'd be surprised if a small drop of milk and sweetener would make a difference, if in doubt ring the Pharmacy up where you got the antibiotics, the telephone number is on the dispensing label.

Sounds like you are on one of the penicillin type antibiotics, mosty of them end in" llin" or "mycin" or similar.

Some foods interfere with absorption so they are best taken on an empty stomach, also when taken on an empty stomach you get a bigger "hit" from the antibiotic.

I don't think a cup of tea or similar will make any difference, a sandwich or burger would be a bad idea though!

right-o, thanks both for your input. It is a penicillin and I'm doing my best to have them an hour before food... made a little easier this time as I've started victoza since I was last on them and that's dramatically reduced my food intake. Trying to take them on an empty stomach when I spent the whole day 'grazing' was a nightmare! :D
