Helllo everyone! I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to help my daughter become more independant in dealing with her hypos and insulin at school and friends houses etc!
She is type 1 and has been for nearly 2 years but shes starting secondary school next year and im trying to make her more independant i will always be on the end of the phone for her (obviously) but i think its important she feels confident on deciding what to ahve if shes low or what insulin she thinks for the food shes eating! i try to involove her when im deciding her insuling saying right youve got tis for dinner how many units do u think! we are pretty much carb counting and i involve her in it all and explain why i think this many units and i feel she understands. There is a careplan in place at the school which they are pretty good with but like today for example she had a hypo3.4mmol at 2.10pm and her TA who normally sits with her to help if she needs it wasnt there today so she got on with it and decided on 2 dextrose and rechecked 15 mins later and was 4.2mmol so decided she better have another tablet to stop it going down again! no carbs!!!
i told her after school once she'd told me whats she'd done that 1 dextrose probaly would of done the job let alone 3! and asked her why she didnt eat a breadstiuck after rechecking! :o/ its little things like that, that i would appreicate advice on ideas on making her remember how we treat hypos at home and to remember the things she should be doing ?
i put notes in her bag reminding her of the things shes gotta do and how to do them i also stuck a note on her classroom wall where she sits when shes low and she still didnt do it right lol so im at a point where i literally dunno what else to do!
i dont wanna be to harsh on her but i dont wanna be to soft either :o/
any advice?
thanks

Hi Kaysmummy

You sound as though you doing the right things and managing pretty well, well done. She certainly sounds lkie a well adjusted and sensible young lady

Just an idea, but how about buying her a really snazzy/cool note book, not A4 size, this would be her special book to write important things in and would give her a bit more 'grown up' responsibility.

I hope you find something that works. With best wishes RRB

Hi,
Your daughter needs a 10/10 for the way she treated her hypo. The simple rule to remember is the rule of 15. 15 carbs and wait 15 mins then test again.
There is no need to follow up with starchy carbs at all. So full credit to her. :)

 ive never heard or been told about rule 15 and i just googled it so thanks :)

but it is the general forgetfulness im more concerned about rather than the hypo treatment today like making sure she has enough of everything in her bag and just remembering what times she has to check her levels and what she she eat before pe etc at what age do i back off and expect her to take more control as a mum i just want her to feel confident she can do it herself and it will make me feel better whenshe has school trips away for long periods etc :D

well great carbsrok....15 carbs...retest in 15 mins...luv you so simple and catchy...will tell jane as she is now hyer hypo hyper xxxthankyou xx

Kay will pick it up very quickly when she wants to do something and you say no.
Many years ago (1066) I wanted to go on a school trip lasting a week, Mum said no you are to much of a baby and wont do anything to help yourself re your diabetes unless I tell you all the time. I grew up in her words very quickly and went on the trip. (In those days there was no blood testing)

I'd never heard of the 15 min rule either untill a couple of years ago. It's good for kids though to have something catchy to remember. :)

I once attempted to treat a low bg that I had infront of some D specialists with some jelly babies and after waitng 15mins and testing again (was still a bit low) got told off for not also eating some carb. Felt much better after eating a garibaldy biccie which one of the dsns handed me from the staff room.

It takes ages for a biscuit to digest so suspect the quick carbs had done their job before the biscuit hit the system.
I have never ever followed up with starchy carbs in 48 years of being on insulin. I did read an article last year sometime which basicaly said no need to follow up with the starchy carbs as it caused a large rebound.

im in the same situation as your mum was then carbsrok kay has a trip next year for a week and i dont feel very confident about it i really want her to stop realying on me to do it all (even tho i would check her bag after shes packed it without her knowing) it would just be good to see her taking on more responsibility.

 thanks i like that ive saved it to look back on when shes doing my head in with it again maybe she can look at it when im doing her head in to lol thanks :D
